About Egyptian Museum
As a crown jewel in any Egypt collection, the Egyptian Museum stands as a must-visit for anyone fascinated by ancient civilizations. The Egyptian Museum was inaugurated in 1902 and is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East.
It houses the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities, with over 120,000 items on display.
The museum’s star attraction, Tutankhamun’s golden mask, is made of 11 kilograms of solid gold and inlaid with semi-precious stones.
The Narmer Palette, one of the oldest royal artifacts in existence (c. 3100 BC), is displayed here and marks the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt.
Despite the opening of new museums in Cairo, the Egyptian Museum still retains many unique artifacts not found anywhere else, including colossal statues and original royal sarcophagi.

Main entrance (Geographical Society building)
Located at the north end of Tahrir Square, the museum’s main entrance is easy to spot thanks to its grand pink neoclassical façade. The entrance is step-accessible, with dedicated wheelchair ramps available for visitors with reduced mobility. Security checks and ticket counters are positioned just inside the main doors. The entrance is a short, flat walk from the Sadat Metro Station and nearby taxi drop-off points, making it convenient for all guests.
Regular Hours: Open daily from 9am to 5pm.
Last Entry: Final admission is at 4pm.
Special Hours/Closures: The museum remains open year-round, including weekends and public holidays. However, hours may be adjusted during Ramadan or for special events and maintenance. It’s always a good idea to confirm timings on the official website or with your ticket provider before your visit.
