Located in the small cemetery next to the Hallstatt Church, was built to address the problem of limited burial space. Families would paint the skulls with elaborate floral designs and inscriptions, which included the deceased’s name, date of birth and death, and sometimes even a brief epitaph or profession. This was done to honor the deceased and keep their memory alive.
