Went on a cloudy day with rain and thundet which was good - still hot but no sun to contend with and the small showers cooled you down! Unfortunately tickets I bought was not fast track so had to queue to exchange my online booking for a physical ticket - line was long so ended up waiting about 45 mins!!! Pompeii is huge so didn't manage it all even after 3 hours, but saw all the main parts. Could have done with a lift to get in and out as the slope just after the entrance was steep but with time and patience my 83 year old mum managed it! There's a cafe bang in the middle of the site which was a welcome relief. Also water refilling stations along the way too. Glad we went, we got the train which added to the adventure.

As promised, we quickly entered the Pompeii site through the lower gate after collecting our paper entrance ticket. There are several secure parking lots close to this gate. The site itself is truly magnificent and moving. We spent 6.5 hours there, and even then, we gave up on several areas! We didn't book the houses outside the main site. For children, we recommend the children's museum at Porta Sarno, which is well air-conditioned, full of felt-tip pens for drawing and not very crowded. Perhaps it lacks a play area for parents to relax while the little ones run around safely?

Audioguide was good. As the ruins are in a pit and no breeze can be felt in there, it felt like being in a frying pan ( I was there in July). Therefore it was good to have a small area with trees and loungers to sit and rest in the shadow. There was also a water tap, but the water probably wasn't potable, so bring your own water. The area to explore is much smaller than Pompeii, so it could fit better to those who are not interested to spend a long time exploring the ruins - in comparison, Pompeii is really huge. Some very well preserved mosaics and wall paintings. Less people than in Pompeii.

This was a once in a lifetime experience being able to walk around the ruins of Herculaneum. I was able to experience the history of this area and was completely submerged into all the facts across the ruins. There were so many delicate intricacies which have been preserved so well.

The booking went really well, there was no overpriced surcharge. It would have been nice if I had also received a map when I showed my ticket. I didn't see it anywhere myself, but another visitor had one. The excavation site is similar to Pompeii - only smaller and generally less grandiose. The construction and layout of the houses is similar. Easy to traverse in 3 hours. Even on your own, if you want to get a taste of the atmosphere and understand the display boards with explanations in English. If you want more information, you should book a guide.

Mt. Vesuvius forms an imposing backdrop as a reminder that both towns were buried under meters of ash and pumice after its tragic eruption in 79 A.D. There were two main stages in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In the first phase, an enormous column of volcanic ash, gas, and rock shot high into the air and then began to cascade down the sky. It is theorized that because the wind was blowing in the south-eastern direction, this rain of pumice rocks fell over the town of Pompeii, injuring citizens and trapping them in collapsing buildings. Herculaneum survived this phase, potentially allowing many residents to escape before the more destructive second stage of eruption.

The second stage consisted of pyroclastic flows, fast-flowing rivers of gas and ash that cascade down the side of the volcano with intense speed and ferocity. These flows buried Pompeii under 4-6m of ash and covered Herculaneum in roughly 25m of ash. Despite this, archaeologists have excavated and preserved several everyday objects that will give you a glimpse into the life of ancient Romans; from amphitheaters, public baths, and other sites.

    Pompeii

Villa of the Mysteries has stunning frescoes with a complex diversity of back stories! The space was essentially a grand farmhouse with its own grape press. In 1909, a fresco that stretches over 17 metres long was discovered in one of its rooms. House of the Faun is named after the small statue in front of it. In the atrium, there is a mosaic to be found containing the word ‘welcome’. Another famous mosaic was also in this house - depicting the fight between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia in the Battle of Issus in 333BC. Many of the sculptures found in the house are now stored at the National Archaeological Museum for preservation.

    Herculaneum

Villa of Papyri with 1800 cylinders filled with papyrus that had been coiled up for centuries. Most writings discovered here were found to be of 1st century philosopher Philodemus. The House of Neptune and Amphitrite is a small, but richly decorated home in Herculaneum, featuring a mosaic that represents the sea-god Neptune and his wife. It is unique because it connects to an adjoining shop - one of the best preserved in all of Herculaneum and Pompeii. So far we know the shop sold wine, and jars of chickpeas and beans.
