London Hop-on Hop-off tours: At a glance

Swapping Tube changes for one simple ticket makes London sightseeing far easier: a Hop-on Hop-off tour is an open-top bus network with unlimited rides on set routes. Passes typically come as 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour options, reaching the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the London Eye, and St. Paul’s, with many operators bundling a Thames river cruise.

How it works: Choose a 24-hour, 48-hour, or 72-hour pass; once you board, you can hop-on hop-off freely until it expires.
What's included: Most tours include multiple routes, open-top seating, and multilingual audio guides, with selected passes adding a Thames river cruise or brief walking tour.
Flexibility: Ride a full loop or hop off whenever you like.
Operators: Operators include Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, and City Sightseeing.

Who should opt for a Hop-on Hop-off tour in London

First-time visitors

Trying to string together Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, and Trafalgar Square with Tube changes and busy crossings can feel like a logistics puzzle. A Hop-on Hop-off pass joins these icons on clear routes, with multilingual audio guides and unlimited hops helping you grasp the city layout while you decide where to linger.

Solo travelers

Crossing between Westminster, the City of London, and the West End alone means constantly checking maps, watching your bag, and guessing which bus to take. Hop-on Hop-off routes, with designated stops, onboard commentary, and apps that track live bus locations, let you move confidently while still feeling connected to what you are passing.

Budget travelers

Covering distant areas like the British Museum, King’s Cross, and Oxford Street via separate Tube fares, buses, and paid tours can silently add up. A Hop-on Hop-off ticket folds transport and sightseeing into one pass, with 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour options and an included Thames section on many tickets reducing extra point-to-point costs.

Families

Navigating the Underground with a buggy and tired kids between the Natural History Museum, Hyde Park, and SEA LIFE London Aquarium can quickly drain everyone’s energy. Step-free access on most Hop-on Hop-off buses, stroller-friendly boarding, kids’ audio channels, and frequent stops at these family hubs turn the journey itself into part of the day’s entertainment.

Art & history enthusiasts

Jumping between the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Victoria and Albert Museum on regular transport often means backtracking through busy interchanges instead of focusing on the stories. Hop-on Hop-off routes link these heritage sites directly, while detailed audio guides in multiple languages give context as you ride between eras.

The ideal Hop-on Hop-off pass duration for your London trip

24-hour/1-day pass

Best if you have just one full day in London or want an overview on arrival. You can comfortably do one complete loop plus 2–3 major stops, for example Westminster, Tower of London, and Trafalgar Square or Buckingham Palace. Expect a fairly packed schedule with shorter attraction visits. Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, City Sightseeing, City Tour, and Topview all offer 24-hour or 1-day options. Many include a one-way Thames River cruise and sometimes guided walking tours or an evening panoramic tour.

48-hour/2-day pass

Well suited to weekend stays, families, or anyone who prefers not to rush. Two days let you split sightseeing: one day for Westminster, the City, and the Tower of London, and another for South Kensington museums, Harrods, or extra photo loops. Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, City Sightseeing, City Tour, and Topview offer 48-hour passes. These often upgrade the Thames River cruise (for example to a round trip), add walking tours, night or evening bus tours, and are frequently used in attraction combos like the London Eye or SEA LIFE.

72-hour/3-day pass

Best if London is your main stop and you like to explore deeply at an easy pace. Three days mean you can treat the bus as a flexible shuttle: revisit favorite areas, fit in longer interior visits (Tower, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s), and still cover Kensington and riverside neighborhoods. Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, City Sightseeing, and City Tour provide 72-hour passes, typically with a Thames River cruise plus an evening or night tour and guided walking tours included.

How does a London Hop-on Hop-off bus tour work?

Book your pass online

Choose a 24-hour/48-hour/72-hour London pass to match your plans. Most operators offer instant confirmation when you book online. Your ticket is delivered digitally, ready to use on arrival.

Download or scan your e-ticket

Open your confirmation email on your phone and locate the QR code. Most services accept mobile tickets, so there’s no need to print. Simply show your e-ticket when you first board.

Locate your nearest stop

Head to any official Hop-on Hop-off stop to start your tour. Use the route map, and where available, live tracking apps to spot nearby buses. Different operators may use separate stop networks.

Hop on and get comfortable

Board the bus and choose between the open-top deck or the covered lower deck. Plug into the multilingual audio guide, or where available, listen to a live guide. Headphones are usually provided onboard.

Enjoy the city at your own pace

Stay on for a complete loop to get an overview of London’s main sights. Hop off whenever you want extra time at a landmark. Buses usually arrive every 10–20 minutes, depending on traffic and season.

Hop off and rejoin

When you are ready to move on, return to any stop on the same operator’s route. Join the next bus going in your chosen direction. Color-coded lines and clear stop names help you navigate.

End your tour anywhere you like

Finish your sightseeing at whichever stop suits your plans best. Your pass stays valid from its first activation until the end of its chosen duration. There’s no need to return to your starting point.

Bonus features

Many London Hop-on Hop-off tickets include extra experiences such as river cruises, themed walking tours, or evening routes. Most operators provide onboard maps, and some offer Wi-Fi and live tracking apps. Check your pass for specific inclusions.

Tips to make the most of your Hop-on Hop-off London tour

  • Start with a full loop : Board one of the first buses, stay on for the 2–2.5 hour circuit, and treat it as a moving preview. Drop map pins at must‑sees so you know exactly where to hop off later.

  • Cluster your route by neighbourhoods : Cluster your stops by area rather than chasing every landmark in order of excitement. When checking operator maps, favour routes covering your clusters: Westminster–Buckingham–Trafalgar, Tower–Tower Bridge–St Paul’s, and South Kensington museums–Harrods, so you avoid long, slow cross‑city rides.

  • Activate your hours strategically : Time your pass activation carefully. With a 24-hour ticket, starting around 11am often lets you ride through to late morning next day. On 48-hour/72-hour passes, pack big interior visits into day one, keeping day two lighter and more scenic.

  • Make combos and cruises do the heavy lifting : Look for selected tours that bundle Hop-on Hop-off with timed entries or a Thames cruise. Take the river segment around midday as a break, and book Tower of London or London Eye slots 60–90 minutes after your planned arrival.

  • Plan food stops beyond the nearest pub : For better food than the closest tourist pub, use stops near Borough Market, Covent Garden or Soho and walk a few minutes. Aim for slightly early or late lunches to dodge 1pm queues, then hop back on well‑fed and quicker.

  • Dress for top‑deck weather, not the forecast : London’s weather flips fast, so dress in layers, pack a waterproof and remember the top deck is windier than it looks. In winter, last buses around 4:30pm make mornings prime bus time and afternoons better for indoor sights.

  • Sync shopping and strolling with local rhythms : Use stops around Oxford Street, Regent Street and Covent Garden for souvenir runs: British tea, chocolate, bookshops and high‑street fashion. Londoners pack the Tube at rush hour, so strolling these districts while buses hit traffic can be your efficient choice.

Frequently asked questions about Hop-on Hop-off tour London

  • Most London Hop-on Hop-off passes activate when your ticket is first scanned on board and then run for the selected duration, such as 24-hour or 48-hour. Some 1-day tickets follow calendar dates and expire at the end of the day.

I really liked my visit to the Madame Tussauds museum in London. It was magical, with two minor drawbacks though: the statues of Obama and Michael Jackson aren't completely successful. I was also surprised to discover that both attractions were included in the ticket price. An overall great experience! I really enjoyed my visit to Madame Tussauds in London. It was magical, although there were two minor drawbacks: the Obama and Michael Jackson wax figures weren't entirely convincing. I was also surprised to discover that both attractions were included in the ticket price. Overall, a very good experience!

An unforgettable experience at Madame Tussauds London! I visited on my own, but the immersive atmosphere made me feel like I had company the entire time. Every room had its own unique vibe, and each one was better than the last! From feeling like a Hollywood star surrounded by familiar faces, to stepping into the world of the British Royal Family, there was so much to explore. 👑 My absolute favorite was the little train ride through London’s history — such a fun and unexpected highlight! The serial killers section was fascinating, and the superheroes room was amazing, especially seeing Captain America… my forever crush! 🦸‍♂️❤️ Hands down, one of the most fun and interactive museums I’ve ever visited. Whether you’re going solo or with friends, I couldn’t recommend it more! ✨

At 8:00 AM, we walked along the Thames from the Harriott Hotel by the London Eye (which we booked this morning through this app) to the Tower, arriving right on time at 8:45 AM. We still had to wait about 45 minutes until entry, but that is normal and wasn't an issue at all in the sunny weather! Following the advice we’d received, we headed straight over to the Crown Jewels exhibition. That collection is truly impressive! The other areas are all interestingly designed as well. The entire castle and all its sections are in very good, well-maintained, and restored condition. You’d never believe that the Tower has several hundred years under its belt! The guards are all very friendly, but also take their duty very seriously! They are happy to let you take photos, but putting an arm around their shoulder—which one female tourist tried to do—was politely declined! The restrooms are also in very good condition. As a German, it's nice to see that some signs also provide information in German! However, exploring some of the areas does require good physical fitness. In the White Tower, you first walk through all 3 floors twice along the length and twice across the width before winding your way back down inside one of the turrets! The minimum 3 hours you should plan to see most areas fly by very quickly! If, like us, you also opt for Tower Bridge admission with a slightly cheaper combo ticket, take the stairs instead of the elevator (which we only noticed once we reached the top), and then walk all the way back to the hotel, you are guaranteed some serious muscle soreness the next day if you're an out-of-shape tourist! The meticulously maintained Engine Rooms of Tower Bridge are also very interesting. The steam engine looks so pristine that you’d think it was just built! Though back when it was still coal-fired, it probably looked a bit dustier! The rich green with contrasting pin-striping painted on all the moving parts shows that true craftsmen who loved their trade were at work here! All in all, a fantastic combo trip that is well worth doing twice in a lifetime! It’s a pity, though, that no guided tours are offered in German, but you rarely find those at British attractions anyway...

Enjoyed the afternoon Tea Bus Tour! The light snacks were tasty and the souvenir to-go tea cup was a nice touch. (Emphasis on snack - finger foods & bite size sweets so don't come hungry). The bus decorations were cute but wish they had a designated photogenic backdrop or area (we did arrive just in the nick of time so that might've been an option that was available had we arrived early). The staff did offer to take our pic while we were seated which after removing the guests seated behind us made for a decent picture. Lastly my only real critique would be: book this more for ambience, listening to the music & socializing rather than an option to see the listed tourist destinations because depending on where you're seated it's hard to see and while you're enjoying conversation & the ride you tend to tune out the announcement of each landmark. Overall a pleasant laid back twist on London's customary tea time tradition.

The experience was very nice. The food was delicious, and the hosts very friendly (Alimat and Aminat). The tour was nice for the sightings, potty the Buckingham Palace is not really visible during the tour. And Unfortunately we were 3 and 1 of us was sitting alone, and not next to but behind us.

We went to see westlife at the 02 arena, the cable car allowed us to see the arena from the other side and see how large it actually is, we were able to watch the climbers at the top of the arena too. We then saw a food festival that was happening on the other side and someone was water boarding too. It just made our whole day magical. I will definitely be back again soon as we would love to show my children and grandchild the other side of London. Many thanks for making our day special
