The Basilica of Guadalupe is Mexico's national shrine, and its round new basilica turned fifty in October 2026.
This walk reads it in two halves: the plaza, where three centuries of churches have fought a sinking lakebed, and the hill of Tepeyac, where the Church's account of December 1531 is set. Follow the pilgrims' avenue into the atrium. See the 1976 basilica under its copper roof, where a moving walkway passes the image, the old basilica of 1709 that was lifted and re-founded, and the nuns' church of Capuchinas beside it. Then climb past the Capilla de Indios and the tiled Pocito chapel to the summit chapel, and finish above both basilicas.
Ten stops, about 1.3 km and 75 minutes, at your own pace in English or Spanish. The last two stops are reached by stairs. Churches are free; a dress code applies inside, and masses run almost hourly.
What to bring
- Ticket code: Enter your ticket code on the Roamer redemption page before you set off, while you still have signal.
- Phone and earphones: Bring a fully charged phone and earphones to listen to the self-guided audio tour.
- Data or Wi-Fi: Use mobile data on the walk or open the tour on Wi-Fi before starting if you have no data.
- Clothing: Wear a light layer and a hat you can remove to meet the shrine's dress code and changing weather.
- Water and sun protection: Bring water, sunscreen, and rain protection as most of the route is outdoors with little shade.
What's not allowed
- Dress code: Do not wear low-cut tops, crop tops, tank tops, shorts above the knee, miniskirts, or caps inside any church or chapel.
- Respectful conduct: Do not walk around during mass, raise your voice inside, or photograph people while they are praying.
Accessibility
- Steps on route: Stops 9 and 10, and the descent from stop 10, are only reachable by stairs.
- Step-free alternative: You can follow a step-free route up to stop 8, then return the same way.
- Terrain: Expect uneven paving and sloping floors in older buildings because of the sinking ground.
- Climb and altitude: The hill involves a steep climb at high altitude, so walk slowly and drink water, especially on your first day.
Additional information
- Tour access: The tour opens in your phone browser and needs no app download.
- Best time to go: Aim for a weekday morning between 10 am and noon when the hill is cooler and chapels are open.
- Chapel hours: Capilla del Cerrito opens 07:00 to 18:00, Capilla de Indios 10:00 to 17:00, and Capuchinas from 10:00.
- Basilica hours: The new basilica opens daily 06:00 to 21:00 with frequent masses at the high altar.
- Moving walkway: A moving walkway behind the altar lets you pass the image, and you should keep to the back during mass.
- Carillon shows: The carillon tower stages apparition scenes at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, and 16:00, so you can time your walk to see one.
- Museum visit: The Museo de la Basílica is ticketed and usually opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
- Shrine tours: The shrine offers guided visits Monday to Saturday at 11:00 and 15:00 in Spanish, and you can ask about English.
- Getting to stop 1: You can reach the start via Metro Line 6 to La Villa-Basílica or Metrobús Lines 6 and 7 nearby.
- Route end transport: From the last stop, you can exit to the atrium and walk to Metrobús De los Misterios or Metro La Villa-Basílica.
- Mass schedule: This is a working shrine with masses almost every hour, so you should plan quiet moments accordingly.
- Feast days: Avoid 10 to 13 December as millions of pilgrims visit and nearby Metro and Metrobús stations may close.
- Jubilee year crowds: During the jubilee year, expect heavier crowds on weekends and feast days due to more pilgrimages.
- Security of belongings: Keep phones, bags, and wallets secure in crowds as the shrine advises visitors to watch their belongings.
- Daylight visit: Walk the atrium and hill only in daylight since their gates publish no official opening hours.
