CoupleVerified booking3 weeks ago5/5The first time we have used Headout to book a tour and very pleased with the seamless , professional service. The morning Meteora tour was perfect. Our guide and driver were great fun and ran the tour very efficiently, allowing us to visit the monasteries that were open that day and stop at viewpoints for photos. We particularly appreciated the way the itinerary was organised to minimise having to walk uphill! Very comfortable, executive-style transport with bottled water provided as needed. Would highly recommend if planning to visit.AAinhoa A
CoupleVerified booking3 weeks ago5/5We took the tour with Maria (our guide) and George (our driver), both of whom were highly professional. They provided us with all sorts of details about what we were seeing, were always willing to answer any questions we had, and far exceeded any expectations we might have had. Highly recommended.SShlomo L
CoupleVerified bookingLast week4/5All the tour was fantastic. Every place looks like a dream. The guide provided all the information very clearly. We are very satisfied with the tour.. The only problem was that they had a mistake with the address of our hotel, and we had to wait about 45 minutes on a very hot day.MMara P
GroupVerified bookingMay 20264/5The guide, speaking English, gave a very good explanation and description of the Meteora complex. The tour, which includes watching the sunset, is interesting; the only downside is that the area is overrun with tourists, so you don’t get to enjoy it quite as much… surrounded by crowds! Yes, you can visit one or two monasteries and a church. Well organized!GGery B
CoupleVerified bookingJun 20265/5A friendly guide who tells us a lot about pretty much everything we stop at or pass by. The transportation is comfortable, and the driver drives smoothly. The stops are beautiful, and there’s plenty of time to stretch our legs and take photos.
What to bring
- Bring some cash for entrance offerings (€3 to €5 per monastery) and any purchases, as credit card facilities may not be available.
- Opt for sturdy shoes with good grip, as paths can be uneven and include many steps.
- Carry water and light snacks, especially during warmer months (June to August).
- Don’t forget to bring your own earphones and a fully charged phone to listen to the audio guides comfortably.
What's not allowed
- While outdoor photography is generally permitted, refrain from taking photos inside churches and of monks or nuns unless explicitly allowed.
- Flying drones is prohibited without special permission due to privacy concerns and wildlife protection.
Accessibility
- Meteora is not wheelchair accessible. All monasteries involve steps or inclined paths.
- If you have mobility constraints, consider visiting monasteries like St. Stephen’s, which has a paved path and minimal stairs.
Additional information
- Your guide will pick you up directly from your accommodation in Kalabaka or Kastraki Village.
- Expect to enter between 2 to 4 monasteries during your visit. Each has a fixed weekly closing day (Great Meteoron is closed on Tuesdays, Varlaam on Fridays), so the exact lineup may vary depending on when you go.
- All monasteries require a €3 to €5 offering per person, payable in cash at the gate.
- Tour guides are not allowed inside the monasteries. To continue exploring while inside, take advantage of the multilingual audio guides.
- Tours use minibuses or local shuttles to transport visitors between sites.
- Basic toilets are available at larger monasteries (Great Meteoron, Varlaam, St. Stephen) and may require a small tip.
- The Meteora monasteries follow a strict dress code. Men must wear long pants; women need long skirts and shoulder coverage. Sleeveless tops and shorts are not allowed.
