There are days in Rome that, even if you've been visiting for years, still feel as good as the first time. Last week, some friends and I went to the Altare della Patria. The initial idea was the classic "let's go for a coffee and then see," but ending up on the roof of Rome is a whole other story. When you reach the top, the view slaps you in the face with history, but in an epic way. There's that mixture of blinding white marble and the sky of Rome, which always seems bluer than anywhere else. Once you reach the panoramic terrace, silence (or almost) descends on its own. I'm not going to give a history lesson, but seeing the Colosseum on one side, the Imperial Forums below your feet, and then turning your gaze towards the rooftops of Prati or St. Peter's... makes you feel very small, but in a positive way. It's the place where you really understand why this city is called "eternal." There's an atmosphere that makes you want to take a break from your phone. We sat down for a moment in a corner, watched the cars coming and going like ants down in the square, and talked about everything and nothing. It's the kind of place that makes you appreciate beauty effortlessly, without having to pay an exorbitant ticket price or stand in long lines indoors.

This was one of the few places that we did not have to queue to enter. We enjoyed the magnificent views from the roof and the cafe allowed a welcome break as well.

The building itself was outstanding, breathtaking. However, the glass elevator and the terrace was not that amusing. Definitely not worth paying to get up there, better places and rooftops in Rome to spend money on. It was fine, but definitely not ticket worthy. The building itself from the outside was absolutely beautiful.

Very very nice all, o like it all,
  • Save time and enjoy skip-the-line access to both the Altar of the Fatherland—including its panoramic glass elevator—and the Rome Pantheon with this convenient combo ticket.

    Getting started

Begin at the tour operator’s office near the Altar of the Fatherland, where you’ll validate your ticket. At the Pantheon, simply scan your pre-booked pass at the entrance and allow extra time for the mandatory security check.

    What to expect

Altar of the Fatherland, Museum of the Risorgimento & Palazzo Venezia

Italy’s largest national monument, the Altare della Patria, stands as a neoclassical tribute to the country’s unification. Ride the glass elevator to the terrace for sweeping views over Rome, then explore the Museum of the Risorgimento and Palazzo Venezia, each rich in history and art.

    Features:

    • Glass elevator terrace: Reach the monument’s rooftop for unobstructed views of the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and Colosseum.

    • White marble facade and Corinthian columns: Admire the monument’s grand architectural details and the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II.

    • Museum of the Risorgimento: See artifacts, documents, and weapons that chronicle Italy’s path to unity.

    • Palazzo Venezia: Discover Renaissance art, historic artifacts, and tranquil courtyard gardens in this former papal residence.

    Pantheon

Step inside the 2,000-year-old Pantheon, once a Roman temple and now a basilica, famed for its engineering and architectural innovation. Fast-track entry lets you spend more time beneath the vast dome and exploring its storied interior.

    Features:

    • The dome and oculus: Marvel at the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome, with natural light streaming through the central oculus.

    • Renaissance interiors: View sunken panels, marble floors, and the tombs of Italian kings and artists like Raphael.

    • Polytheistic origins: Learn how this ancient temple evolved into a Christian basilica, reflecting centuries of Roman history.
