Without hesitation this was the single best guided tour we took in Italy! Led by an outstanding guide, Luciano Leone, I was so glad I chose Herculaneum over Pompeii. The tour lasted 2 hours and as students of Antiquity we received insights previously unknown. We wished we could have lingered longer, but the heat was oppressive and the driver waiting. If you can only do one tour it should be this one! We all know of Pompeii, but this smaller gem must be seen!! Booking through headout was super easy and cost-effective!

Our guided group tour of Herculaneum was fantastic. Roberta, our guide, spoke perfect English, was very knowledgeable and brought this amazing site to life with anecdotes and facts. The site itself was impressive, whilst not as big as Pompei but in my opinion more interesting, with so much preserved: frescos, ornamental decoration, structures, even multiple stories to a building. My one gripe is that the instructions on where to meet the guide included 2 photos (and a dot marking the meeting point) at the main entrance on the road when actually they were waiting for us further in at the ticket barrier (not visible from the road).

Our tour guide was the main archaeologist from the 1980's! His name is Luciano, and he was kind and hilarious! Definitely bring a fan, an umbrella and water, it's very hot in summer, if you have time, stay and explore the park some after the tour, the tour just isn't long enough. But it's amazing to hear the facts from the original digs!

Discovering the ruins and the Romans

The Herculaneum Archaeological Park is one of the best-preserved sites in the world. Finding out interesting stories of this site and how the 4000-5000 inhabitants lived here, is going to be a treat for you on this 2-hour guided tour. Visit this UNESCO World Heritage site with your skip-the-line access which has survived a disruptive earthquake and a deadly eruption. Get to know more about how Herculaneum was affected while being at its peak owing to its coastal location. It brought Rome’s patrician families to its resorts for exploring a relaxing. You will get a fair understanding of how the city was slowly gaining life by being renovated, till the terrible eruption of Mount Vesuvius happened, wiping out its inhabitants. All that you will see in 2 hours was once buried under ash and volcanic rocks 16-meter deep.

Digging deep

Explore the site a bit more in detail with your archeological guide with an upgrade. Delve into the different sections of the city like the men’s baths, Hall of the Augustals, Samnite House, and House of the Wooden Partition that withstood the eruption. Even the Fornici, where 300 skeletons, along with personal objects like purses, coins, swords, chisel, and so on is a noteworthy site.
