Hi, so I did the tour with a friend and it was both our first time seeing whales. It took us more or less 1h to see the first whale (in total we saw 3) and I really liked how natural it was: just the crew (and the passengers) searching the horizon, even though the captain knew where to go to have higher chances. Also loved how Siena (hope I wrote her name correctly) kep offering data regarding whales through the micro and in general how helpful the crew was.

Fantastic ride, great tour guide. She was fantastic and super genuine. A real whale nerd. The front desk staff however the guy was a complete dick. We needed a restroom after the boat, didn't seem appropriate to use the boat one after it was docked, and he told us "read the sign" rather than just..... tell us to go across the street.

We had a delightful and very knowledgeable marine biologist. She gave us s substantial information on the behaviors and habits of the whales and dolphins. We learned about the safety practices that f the four boats that protect the various species we were hoping to see. We were particularly fortunate that we were about to watch the activities of 3 humpback whales, 1 minke whale and a pod of dolphins. It was a thoroughly fantastic adventure and a wonderful learning about these majestic ocean animals. Thank you so much for this experience!

  • Season: Late March to November; peak whale and puffin activity June to August
  • Duration: 2 to 3 hours depending on vessel type and route
  • What you'll see: Humpback and minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, porpoises; blue whales occasionally
  • Vessel options: Traditional oak fishing boats, electric schooner, 12-seat RIB speedboats
  • Thermal gear: Insulated flotation overalls and life jackets provided on all standard tours
  • Guide: Local naturalist or marine-focused guide providing live commentary in English
  • Departure point: Husavik harbour ticket offices along Hafnarstétt, all departures from central pier
  • Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, families, photographers, and thrill-seekers choosing faster RIB options

Which Husavik whale watching cruise is right for you?

Your main choice is between a stable traditional oak vessel, a faster small-group RIB for proximity, and a quieter eco-focused electric schooner.

Classic Whale Watching — Traditional Oak Boat

A relaxed, three-hour whale watching experience on a large, stable oak vessel. Choose this if you prioritise comfort, deck space, and an easier ride over speed. It suits mixed-age groups, anyone unsure about sea conditions, and visitors who want time to enjoy the scenery as much as the whales.

  • Departure point: Husavik harbour ticket offices along Hafnarstétt, short walk from town
  • Vessel: Traditional oak vessel with spacious deck, indoor shelter and basic facilities
  • Duration: Around 3 hours including sailing to and from main feeding areas
  • Group size / privacy: Shared departure, typically 30–50 guests spread across the vessel
  • Guide format: Live commentary from experienced local guide or marine-focused crew
  • Pace / comfort: Relaxed and steady; best option for stability, shelter and seasick-prone
  • Includes: Insulated flotation overalls, life jackets, hot drinks and simple onboard refreshments

Express Whale Watching — RIB Speedboat

A high-energy, two-hour safari using a small rigid inflatable vessel to cover more of Skjálfandi Bay quickly. Choose this if you value proximity to whales, minimal transit time, and an intimate group over shelter and seating. You are more exposed to wind and spray, but can often reposition rapidly when sightings occur.

  • Departure point: Husavik harbour RIB pontoon; check in 30 minutes before departure
  • Vessel: Open rigid inflatable vessel (RIB) with jockey seating and powerful engines
  • Duration: About 2 hours, maximising time near current whale and puffin hotspots
  • Group size / privacy: Small shared group; usually up to 12 guests per departure
  • Guide format: Skipper-guide providing safety briefing and concise wildlife commentary
  • Pace / comfort: Fast and exposed; most physical ride with greater wind and sea spray
  • Includes: Flotation suit, life jacket, goggles; some operators add gloves and headwear

Silent Eco Whale Tour — Electric Schooner

A quieter, lower-impact experience on a converted electric oak schooner. Choose this if reduced engine noise and sustainability matter to you, and you like a calmer atmosphere on the water. The vessel glides more quietly through the bay, which some guests feel makes sightings more immersive. Capacity is smaller than classic tours, with a similar comfort level but a slightly shorter overall outing and a stronger focus on responsible whale watching practices.

  • Departure point: Husavik harbour eco-tour pier; meeting point at marked harbour office
  • Vessel: Electrically powered oak schooner, designed for near-silent cruising and low emissions
  • Duration: Approximately 2.5–3 hours, depending on conditions and whale locations
  • Group size / privacy: Shared small-to-mid group; roughly 30 guests when fully loaded
  • Guide format: Nature-focused guide emphasising behaviour, ecology and conservation topics
  • Pace / comfort: Gentle and quiet; stable deck with outdoor views and limited indoor shelter
  • Includes: Warm overalls or flotation suits, life jackets; sometimes simple hot drinks onboard

Whale sightings & season in Húsavík

Best time to go: The main Húsavík whale watching season runs from April to October, with June, July, and August as the clear peak when waters are richest in food and the most boats operate. May and September usually still offer strong sightings with fewer crowds. March and November departures are limited and more weather-dependent, with lower but still real chances of encounters.

What you’re likely to see: Humpback whales are the headline species and are reliable in peak summer. Minke whales are common through the main season. White-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises are frequent companions to tours. Blue, fin, and sei whales are occasional summer visitors and should be considered rare bonuses. Puffins and other seabirds are common from mid-April to mid-August. Some operators offer a free re-ride if no whales or dolphins are seen. Sightings are never guaranteed, but operators are good at finding them in season.

Responsible whale watching: A must-do

Whale watching in Húsavík follows Icelandic regulations and the IceWhale code of conduct, which all major local operators adhere to.

  • Low-impact vessels: Traditional oak boats and the electric schooner Opal run relatively quietly, limiting underwater noise and emissions in feeding areas.
  • Regulated approach distance: Captains respect Icelandic Environment Agency distance guidelines and slow to idle speed whenever whales are nearby.
  • No pursuit policy: If whales dive, change direction, or move away, boats hold position instead of following.
  • Pod congregation limits: Operators coordinate by radio so only a small number of vessels are near the same whales at once.

Húsavík operators have applied these standards since the town’s whale watching began in the 1990s.

What a whale watching day looks like in Húsavík

The following sections outline the daily flow of a whale watching tour in Húsavík.

Board and kit up

Check in at the harbour-side office, meet the crew, and wriggle into a thick flotation overall and life jacket. The air feels crisp and salty as you step onto the traditional oak boat or compact RIB.

Head into Skjálfandi Bay

Engines hum and the boat eases out past Húsavík’s colourful houses toward open water. Over 20–40 minutes, the guide explains safety and what blows, fins, and tail flukes look like while everyone settles along the railings.

The search phase

Speed drops and conversation quiets as the captain zigzags through likely feeding areas for an hour or more. Guests and crew scan the dark water and horizon, trading directions – this slow, focused searching feels like a shared mission.

Possible sightings moments

When someone spots a blow or fluke, the boat gently repositions at a distance and drifts. Humpbacks may surface repeatedly, dolphins sometimes arc alongside, and cameras click as the guide describes behaviour without rushing the animals.

Warm up and reset

Between sightings or after a long search stretch, people duck behind the wheelhouse or into the sheltered cabin on larger boats. Hot chocolate or coffee warms cold hands while others stay on deck, watching seabirds and scanning for new movement.

Return to harbour

The captain turns back toward Húsavík, usually after 2–3 hours at sea, and the pace relaxes. Guests peel off suits, compare photos, and watch the bay and mountains slide past before stepping back onto the quay, often planning what to do next in town.

What to expect from the conditions

  • Climate and cold: Even in summer the bay feels much colder than town, with wind chill; dress in warm layers under provided suits.
  • Sea conditions: Skjálfandi Bay can be choppy and RIBs are fast and exposed; consider the larger oak boats if you’re motion‑sensitive.
  • Daylight and visibility: Early and late season trips may run in grey, foggy or low-angle light, which can make spotting harder; choose summer for clearer conditions.
  • Sightings reality: Húsavík has strong in-season sighting rates but whales and dolphins are wild, so no operator can promise encounters.

A traditional oak boat is usually the better choice for families or anyone unsure about seasickness.

What to expect from the conditions

A classic oak boat is generally the easier choice for families or anyone sensitive to cold or motion, with conditions detailed in the bullet points.

What to expect from the conditions

  • Climate/cold: Even in summer, wind on Skjálfandi Bay feels much colder than on land; dress in warm layers under provided suits.
  • Sea conditions: The bay is usually sheltered but can be choppy, especially on RIB boats; consider motion-sickness meds or choose a larger oak boat.
  • Daylight/visibility: Early spring and late autumn tours can run in cooler temperatures and flatter light; pack extra layers and manage photo expectations.
  • Sightings reality: Húsavík has strong sighting records but wildlife is wild and nothing is guaranteed; treat whales as a bonus, not a promise.

Plan your visit

  • Operating season: Most tours run March–November; peak whale activity and puffins from May to August.
  • Daily departures: Summer sailings typically from around 08:00 through late afternoon; some evenings or midnight-sun departures in June–July.
  • Cruise duration: About 3 hours on traditional oak boats; around 2 hours on RIB speedboats.
  • Time of day: Whales can appear anytime; mornings often calmer, evenings quieter with softer light.
  • Shoulder months: Fewer daily departures and higher cancellation risk in March–April and October–November.

Tips for the best whale watching trip in Húsavík

  • Pick the right boat for your stomach: If you’re even slightly motion-sensitive, book a traditional oak boat over a RIB — it’s noticeably smoother on Skjálfandi Bay.

  • Aim for the first RIB of the day if you’re a photographer: The 8–9 AM departures in July often combine flat seas, low winds, and beautifully soft side-light on breaching humpbacks.

  • Head for the bow on oak boats once whales are found: Crews usually slow and pivot so both sides get views; moving forward then gives you cleaner sightlines over cameras and railings.

  • Use Húsavík’s landmarks to keep your bearings: When you start feeling queasy, fix your eyes on the church steeple or mountain ridges instead of the waves or your phone screen.

  • Choose a puffin-inclusive tour in early summer: If you’re here mid-April to mid-August, book a route that swings past Puffin Island to turn “whale watching” into a full wildlife morning.

  • Book midnight sun departures to dodge crowds: June and early July late-evening tours usually sail with fewer people, giving you more rail space and a calmer, golden-lit bay.

  • Keep voices low when boats cut the engine near whales: In Skjálfandi’s still conditions, sound carries — staying quiet helps the captain hold a relaxed distance without whales sounding early.

  • Bring a zoom lens rather than relying on your phone: On Húsavík’s larger oak boats, whales can surface 50–100 meters away; a 70–300mm range captures details your smartphone can’t.

  • Use the hot chocolate run as your warm-up, not your main meal: Most classic tours serve it on the way back, so have a light snack in town beforehand to avoid getting chilled and hungry.

  • Plan the Whale Museum or GeoSea right after your cruise: Booking these within walking or short-driving distance lets you stay in your warm layers and ride the “whale high” all afternoon.

Frequently asked questions about whale watching tours in Húsavík

  • Most classic tours on traditional oak boats last around 3 hours from departure to return. High-speed RIB safaris are shorter, usually about 2 hours. Check the exact duration on your chosen tour when booking, especially in shoulder seasons when schedules are more limited.
