Below Boston's gold-domed State House, the city reshaped its own ground. Developers shaved Beacon Hill in 1799 and tipped it into the river, the city bought the Public Garden as new land in 1824, and from 1857 gravel trains filled the Back Bay one house lot at a time.
Start at the Shaw memorial, climb to the African Meeting House on Smith Court, and wander Louisburg Square and cobbled Acorn Street before dropping to Charles Street, the old waterline. Cross the Public Garden past the ducklings and the lagoon bridge, follow the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, and finish at Trinity Church, standing on wooden piles in old marsh, and the Boston Public Library.
Eleven stops, about 3 km and 110 minutes, in English and at your own pace. Start whenever you like; entry to the museums and Trinity Church is not included.
