Once recognized as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. This Heart of Florence gives you a quick glimpse into the city’s extensive history and incredible art.
Learn About the Powerful Medici Family
Walk through the narrow streets of the Medici Family District, one of the oldest streets in Florence. The banking family and political dynasty began their influence over the city in the first half of the 15th century, and at one point were Europe’s wealthiest family. See Palazzo Medici Riccardi, their first residence in the San Lorenzo District, their Church, and the mausoleum-Medici Chapels.
Discover the Religious Center of Florence
No second guesses here - this is of course the magnificent Duomo complex where you can see the Cathedral itself along with the stunning Brunelleschi Dome. Other monuments of significance include the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Gates of Paradise which depicts Biblical scenes, and the stately Giotto’s bell tower.
A little further along the Via Calzaioli street, you will find the centuries-old Orsanmichele Church, a fine specimen of Florentine Gothic art.
Admire Piazza Signoria, Florence’s Outdoor Museum
Pass through the bustling Mercato della Paglia (Straw Market) to reach Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence. The romantic, picturesque bridge is lined with several jewelry shops. The last stop of the tour is Piazza Signoria, Florence’s political center and one of the world’s most beautiful squares. It is peppered with sculptural and architectural gems including the Fountain of Neptune and Palazzo Vecchio.
