Indulge in a traditional Turkish bath ritual at Istanbul’s historic Sifa Hamam, steps from the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapı Palace.
Getting started
Find the entrance marked 'Historical Turkish Bath – Şifa Hamamı – Since 1777' and check in at reception. You’ll receive a personal locker for your belongings, along with towels, slippers, and a peştemal (traditional wrap). Once ready, your attendant will guide you into the warm marble chamber to begin your hammam ritual.
A living piece of Ottoman history
Dating back to 1777, Sifa Hamam stands as one of Istanbul’s most historic bathhouses. This mixed-gender hammam combines authenticity and comfort, with gender-matching therapists who uphold the centuries-old bathing customs once enjoyed by Ottoman nobles.
Warm marble room
Relax for around 30 minutes as the gentle heat and steam of the marble chamber open your pores and prepare your skin for cleansing. The atmosphere — domed ceilings, marble basins, and the soft echo of running water — transports you straight into a page of Istanbul’s past.
The classic hammam ritual
Enjoy a traditional full-body exfoliation with a single-use kese mitt, followed by a cloud-like foam massage on the heated marble platform. This ritual cleanses and revitalizes your skin while offering a sense of calm that lingers long after your session ends.
Aromatherapy oil massage
Sink deeper into tranquility with a soothing aromatherapy oil massage, included in the full-service option. Gentle, rhythmic strokes ease muscle tension and restore balance, blending ancient techniques with fragrant natural oils.
The finishing touch
Complete your experience with a rejuvenating foot massage and a nourishing face mask, both exclusive to the premium package. It’s the perfect finale to leave you refreshed, radiant, and restored. After your treatment, unwind with a glass of Turkish tea in the cool relaxation room, letting your body and mind fully reset.
What to bring
-
If you prefer, carry a swimsuit or modest undergarments to wear beneath the provided wrap, and wear non-slip sandals or flip-flops for comfort and safety.
-
Pack a fresh outfit or a light T-shirt to change into afterward; it’ll make you more comfortable, especially during warmer months.
-
If you have sensitive skin, bring your own personal soap or shampoo; the hammam provides olive oil soap and shampoo.
-
Carry a small water bottle to stay hydrated before or after the steam room.
What’s not allowed
-
To ensure privacy and relaxation, photography, filming, and mobile phone use are not permitted in the steam or bathing areas.
-
Large luggage and bulky bags can’t be brought inside; you’ll find secure lockers for small personal items instead.
-
Loud talking, disruptive behavior, or running in bathing areas is discouraged.
Accessibility
- Please note that Sifa Hammam is not wheelchair accessible, as it’s housed in a centuries-old building with steps, narrow passageways, and uneven marble floors.
