Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
Thingvellir, located about 40 kilometers northeast from Iceland is one of the most important spots in Iceland. It holds tremendous historical and cultural significance and is closely associated with Althing, the parliament of Iceland. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established in 930 in Thingvellir, Althing remained in the region until 1798. It was subsequently discontinued for nearly 45 years and was later re-established in Reykjavik. Gullfoss, also located in southwest Iceland is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland. The Hvita river, originating from the Langjokull glacier flows for nearly 40 kilometers before cascading down a canyon that is 70 meters deep at certain points. The geysers of Haukadalur form the third attraction of the Golden Circle. Since Iceland is located on a tectonic plate boundary, geothermal activity is quite common. Strokkur and Geysir are the two famous geysers in the region. Strokkur is currently very active, and erupts once every 6-10 minutes, and can reach as high as 40 meters.
Around 20 different species of whales can be seen around Iceland. Due to the mixing of the cold Arctic Seawater and the warm North Atlantic Ocean, the region around Iceland is the perfect feeding region. On tours, eight varieties of whales can frequently be seen, including the largest mammal on Earth, the blue whale.
Your Golden Circle tour will begin in the morning. The Thingvellir National Park is overflowing with a multitude of spectacles. You will see several cracks and faults in the region since it the exact spot of the juncture between the Eurasian and North American plates. The massive eruptions of water at the Geysir geothermal area are a sight to behold. You can also see mud pools and fumaroles spewing out hot gases in this region. The Gullfoss Waterfall presents a stunning spectacle, as the cool water plunges into the depths of the canyon.
Once you return from the Golden Circle tour, you will have approximately an hour before you board the fishing vessel at 5 PM. You can explore the old harbor of Reykjavik and its numerous cafes and boutiques as you stroll around the bustling area. You will then meet your guide at the Whale Watching Center. On your cruise, you will see massive humpback whales, dolphins and playful minke whales. Several unique species of birds can be found flying around and catching fish. The whale watching guide will give you much-needed insight into the various species of animals found in Faxafloi Bay. An onboard multimedia show that includes video and images will give you an excellent overview and compelling facts about the marine life. Your guide will also explain the measures and steps taken to ensure the well-being and protection of whales. At the end of this exhilarating 3-hour expedition, you will have much better awareness and knowledge of sea life in Iceland.
