Did this tour with my partner and wow, just wow! Lava tunnel was like stepping onto another planet, so many cool rock shapes and colors, and our guide (think his name was Einar?) was hilarious. He told us stories about trolls and lava elves, which my boyfriend thought was silly but I LOVED it. Northern lights were a bit of a waiting game, but Palli (guide) kept us entertained. When the lights finally showed up, it was EPIC. Pro tip: bring extra socks, your toes will freeze. Hot choco at the end was a nice touch.

Okay so I RARELY write reviews but had to for this one. Did the tour solo, met a bunch of nice people. Lava tunnel guide (Francesca I think?) legit knew everything – she even pointed out these weird ice crystals that looked like dragon scales. Northern lights were late to the party but worth the wait. The bus was warm, thankfully, because outside was freezinggg. Btw, wear gloves with touchscreen fingers if ur gonna take pics. Would 100% do it again.

Family of four (teens 15 and 18), all loved it. The guides are what really make this tour. Palli was so enthusiastic and kept everyone pumped even when we had to wait a while for the auroras. The lava cave is way bigger than I thought, and not as claustrophobic as I feared. My husband banged his head once (watch ur step, lol). The hot chocolate at the end was a lifesaver.
    • Travel by bus from Reykjavík to Raufarhólshellir, where you can explore one of Iceland's largest lava tunnels a guided walk.

    • Walk in the exact path of lava from the Leitahraun eruption around 5,200 years ago, seeing firsthand how molten rock carved this underground passage.

    • Explore up to 350 meters inside the tunnel, equipped with a helmet and flashlight, as your guide explains Iceland’s volcanic geology and the forces that shaped the landscape.

    • You'll be surrounded by towering cave walls with shifting natural colors, echoes in the tunnel, and constant temperatures around 4°C year-round.

    • Fun fact: Raufarhólshellir is often called The Lava Tunnel and even got featured in the Hollywood movie Noah, thanks to its scale, colors, and natural light columns.

So the lights didn’t really show for us (clouds, ugh) but honestly the cave was still worth it. I’m not a geology guy but you can’t NOT be impressed down there. Our group was a bit big tho, so sometimes felt rushed. Still, guides were super friendly and even showed us how to use our phones for long-exposure pics. Would do again, just for the tunnel.

What a memorable night! The guides were so chill and funny, and you can tell they actually care. My boyfriend and I got engaged under the lights (he was sneaky with the ring, oof) – the guide even took photos for us. Lava tunnel was more colourful than I expected. It’s a bit slippery in spots, so def wear good shoes. Loved the whole vibe.
