your experience

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Belvedere Palace is also the site of the Austrian State Treaty. Consisting of two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere, and extensive gardens the unique complex is one of the world's most supreme specimens of Baroque architectural ensemble.

The magnificent structure was built in the 18th century when the Austrian general Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned a summer residence from the famous Baroque architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. In the present day, the Belvedere is one of the prominent museums across the globe with famous art collections dating all the way back to the Middle Ages. Highlights include the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings (including The Kiss and Judith), famous works from the periods of Austrian Baroque, French Impressionism, Viennese Biedermeier, and from Vienna around 1900. You can also admire works by Austrian artists like Rueland Frueauf the Elder, Elena Luksch-Makowsky, and Helene Funke, apart from international artists like Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Auguste Rodin.

The Golden Spring Exhibition

Currently, the Belvedere is redesigning the exhibition of its permanent collection in preparation for 2023— keeping with its 300th-anniversary theme GOLDEN SPRING. The exhibition begins in March. The theme will focus on highlighting the relationship between artists and their times. Get answers to questions like: How did they act in their respective "operating systems"? How did they respond in the face of upheavals and crises? What was the process of artistic work? And what was the international orientation of art during the different eras? Take a chronological tour through 800 years of art, from the Middle Ages to the 1970s. The media stations and other visual resources such as maps, statistics, documents, and photographs will enhance your experience.
