A Baroque masterpiece
The story of the Upper Belvedere began in 1717 AD under Prince Eugene’s benevolent direction. In 1723, the Upper Belvedere was completed – a testament to Baroque charm. Today, the Upper Belvedere is a museum that houses Austria’s most diverse collection of art. Skip the lines and meet your guide at the main entrance to begin your 1.5-hour tour. Take a walk around the Sala Terrena, admiring the imposing carved pillars holding up the structure. Climb the Grand Staircase and observe the stucco reliefs depicting Emperor Darius and his wives surrendering to a victorious Alexander.
The “bel” in Belvedere
As you walk through the museum, you’ll come across beautiful paintings that are sure to leave a lasting impression. In the Transportation of Wounded Soldiers I by August von Pettenkofen, you’ll learn the harsh realities and tragedies of war depicted on the faces of the soldiers. If you’re a nature lover, Johann Knapp’s Homage to Jacquin is not to be missed as it depicts plants from 24 classes of the Linnaean system for categorizing flora. Take a look at the somber Death and the Maiden by Egon Schiele, highlighting a contrast with the beginning of love and the inevitability of death.
Once your tour ends, pick up a souvenir from the museum shop or stop by the history exhibition. You’ll learn the story of the Upper Belvedere that evolved from an idea in Prince Eugene’s mind into a real-life structure reminiscent of Baroque architectural magnificence.
