Pro tips to help you make a pick

On weekends and holidays, choose a dated ticket or reserve a free entry timeslot online in advance. Without a pre-booked slot, you may need to wait for the next available timed entry.

If the Aqua Ring is a priority, book a slot that gets you there before 5pm. The California sea lions return to their main pool in late afternoon, so the overhead rooftop views are best earlier.

Weekday mornings are a smart choice if you want clearer views and less crowding, especially in the Marine Garden. Early arrivals often get the best penguin viewing under the open sky.

Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for a standard visit, or up to 3 hours if you want to catch shows, feeding sessions, and spend extra time taking photos.

Compare the standard ticket with the aquarium + Sunshine 60 Observatory combo. Set tickets have at times been sold for about 10–20% less than buying both attractions separately.

If you expect to visit more than once, the adult annual pass at about ¥4,400 pays off in roughly two visits versus the standard adult admission price of ¥2,600.

Check age-based pricing before booking: adults pay ¥2,600, children in elementary and middle school pay ¥1,300, children aged 4+ pay ¥800, and under-4s enter free.

Tickets are single-entry only, so do not plan to leave and come back later the same day. Finish the exhibits, cafe stop, and gift shop browsing before you exit.

About Sunshine Aquarium

What sets Sunshine Aquarium apart from other Tokyo aquariums is its rooftop setting and open-air animal displays framed by city towers. Few peers combine a 240-ton indoor reef tank with world-first exhibits like the Sunshine Aqua Ring and “Penguins in the Sky.” It also balances compact scale with 80+ tanks, daily shows, and easy access inside Sunshine City.

Did you know?

The Sunshine Aqua Ring is 8 meters wide and hangs 2.3 meters above the rooftop walkway, creating belly-up views of California sea lions against the Tokyo skyline.

Sunshine Lagoon’s 240-ton main tank sits on the 10th floor of the World Import Mart Building, making its scale an engineering feat as well as an exhibit centerpiece.

Sunshine Aquarium was the first in Japan to introduce a dedicated jellyfish tunnel, and its expanded jellyfish zone includes one of Japan’s widest jellyfish tanks at 14 meters.

The aquarium welcomed about 1.47 million visitors in 2019 and recovered to around 1.36 million in 2023, roughly 92% of its pre-pandemic attendance.

An adult annual pass costs about ¥4,400, which is roughly the price of two visits compared with the standard adult ticket price of ¥2,600.

Why visit Sunshine Aquarium?

Sea Lions Overhead in the Aqua Ring

The Sunshine Aqua Ring is an 8-meter-wide donut-shaped saltwater tank suspended 2.3 meters above the rooftop walkway. Standing below it, you can watch California sea lions glide overhead with Sunshine City’s towers behind them; visit before 5pm, when the sea lions return to their main pool.

Open-Air Penguins in the Marine Garden

The rooftop Marine Garden lets you watch African penguins swim and waddle against the Tokyo skyline in the display known as “Penguins in the Sky.” The same outdoor area also includes the “Waterside of Otters” habitat and a pelican lagoon, making it one of the aquarium’s most varied zones.

240-Ton Reef Life in Sunshine Lagoon

Inside, Sunshine Lagoon recreates a warm Pacific lagoon in a two-story tank holding about 240 tons of water. White sand lines the bottom, and around 130 species of tropical fish, rays, and sharks circle through the main viewing area while divers enter for feeding demonstrations.

Japan’s First Dedicated Jellyfish Tunnel

The Kuranetarium introduced Japan’s first dedicated jellyfish tunnel, with curved tanks wrapping just above eye level under soft colored lighting. The expanded jellyfish area also includes one of Japan’s widest jellyfish tanks at 14 meters, creating a calm contrast to the larger predator and reef exhibits.

Barrier-Free Sea Lion Shows Up Close

Several times a day, trainers run 10-minute sea lion presentations in an open-air pool with 360° viewing. With no barrier between the stage and the audience, guests can stand about a meter away while keepers explain sea lion behavior, biology, and training techniques.
