The Key West Sails to Rails Museum is the perfect getaway that combines a comprehensive overview of the history of the Florida Keys and the Key West. With this ticket, you can spend productive time learning about the history and the story of the Age of Sail. The Key West community was significantly impacted by the introduction of railways which developed into a dominant means of transportation. This, in turn, impacted both commerce and politics, and in a sense, Florida came to be built on the foundation of its railroads. At the museum, you can explore the interactive timeframe of Key West history to trace the origins of the practices that made the island famous, such as sponge diving, turtle hunting, fishing, and shipwrecking.
To enhance your experience, there is also a video presentation that covers the story of the Overseas Railroads, giving you an in-depth understanding. In addition to this, activities that are made for both children and adults will add to your immersive experience. Furthermore, you can learn about the laborious task of constructing the railroad across the ocean's open waters via the Maggie Atwell House, the only existing wooden building built by the FEC.
