About Stockholm: Royal Palace

The Royal Palace functions as both an official residence and a multi-museum visit inside one Baroque complex. Visitors can move from the Bernadotte Apartments and Hall of State to the Treasury and Museum Tre Kronor, then add Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities in summer. The visit spans state rooms, regalia, medieval ruins, and classical sculpture in a single site.

Did you know?

The palace contains over 600 rooms, but only a fraction are open to visitors.

Why visit Stockholm: Royal Palace?

Royal Apartments and the Hall of State

The Royal Apartments include the Bernadotte Apartments and ceremonial rooms that still used for state visits and official receptions. In the Hall of State, or Rikssalen, you can see the silver throne of Queen Kristina, a key object for understanding how the monarchy presents itself.

Plan your visit

Main visitor entrance (Slottsbacken/Western side)

Located at the top of the Slottsbacken slope on the west side of the palace, facing Storkyrkan, this is the main entrance for most visitors. Use it for ticket purchase or validation and access to the Royal Apartments. This is the main bottleneck in high season, with queues often forming on the slope and near the doorway. The approach includes a slope and steps, so it can be demanding for visitors with limited mobility. Lifts and alternative accessible routes exist inside, but the historic building is not fully step-free.

Treasury entrance

This separate entrance is on the south side of the palace at the lower levels and is best for visitors heading directly to the Treasury or returning to that section. Queues are usually shorter here than at the main apartments entrance, although narrow stair access can slow entry. Access involves stairs down into the vault area, and this entrance is not fully wheelchair accessible. Follow on-site palace signage once you reach the south side of the complex.

Museum Tre Kronor entrance

The Museum Tre Kronor entrance is reached through a lower courtyard or side entrance under the palace and is marked on-site. It is useful if you want to focus on the medieval castle museum before or after the Royal Apartments. Capacity can be limited, so short waits are possible on busier days. Visitors should expect some uneven floors and steps, with only partial accessibility. This entrance can be less obvious than the main western entrance, so allow a few extra minutes for wayfinding.

Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities entrance

This entrance is on the north side of the palace along the outer facade, facing Norrbro and Strommen. It is mainly for summer visitors heading to Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities, which is typically seasonal. Crowds here are generally lighter than at the main entrance, and this section is often quieter overall. Access is via staircases, and step-free routes are limited. If you are walking from Kungstradgarden or across Strombron, this side of the palace is a convenient approach.
