Your small group Rome and Vatican tours begin in the morning. Meet your guide at a designated point of contact right in front of the Roman Forum. Your first stop is the Colosseum inside with no waiting entry, learn about the arena's unique history of glory and of violence, then walk up Via Sacra into the Roman Forum for a glimpse of life during the reign of dictator Gaius Julius Caesar and that of Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus. Listen as your guide explains how the Roman Empire became so powerful and how it came to decline.
After your tours of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, your guide will lead you to the pristine waters of the Trevi fountain (recently restored by Fendi), perhaps the prettiest and certainly the most famous fountain in the world thanks to Hollywood greats Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck and Anita Ekberg. At the Pantheon, a structure as impressive as the Pyramids of Giza, your guide will explain the rich history of it's origins before arriving at Piazza Navona, the Circus of Domitian in antiquity, where fierce rivals Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Fountain of the Four Rivers) and Francesco Borromini (Church of St. Agnes in Agony) clashed through their representations of Roman Baroque. Today, the square is replete with street artists, actors and painters from all over Italy, making it a pleasant place to stop and rest.
After a break, make your own way across the river and meet at our office for your Vatican tour. While waiting for your tour to depart, don a sword, a shield and a helmet for an impromptu photoshoot against our gladiator arena backdrop. Soon thereafter your guide will lead you directly into the Vatican Museums with no waiting priority entrance.
Your Vatican visit includes the Pio-Clementine Museum, Room of the Muses, the Round Room, the Greek Cross Room, the Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of Maps, the Rooms of Raphael and the Sistine Chapel. From the Sistine Chapel you will have direct access to St. Peter's Basilica where your guide will leave you to explore on your own before exiting on to St. Peter's Square.
