  • Set out on a half-day trip from Lisbon to the foothills of the Sintra Mountains to get your fill of 19th-century Romanticist architecture, gardens and nature parks. To start off, you will have about half an hour to stroll through the winding streets of Sintra’s town center. If you’re up for it, you can stop by and try a traditional delicacy, such as a Travesseiro (custard-filled puff pastry).

From here, you will be heading to the Pena Palace that sits atop the Sintra Mountains. On a clear day, the palace easily stands out with its red-and-yellow color pattern and flashy clock tower and can even be seen from Lisbon. Led by an expert guide, spend your time here exploring the fairytale surroundings and enjoy stunning views of the Pena Park forests, created by King Ferdinand II between 1842 and 1854. Finally, make a pitstop at Boca do Inferno or the “mouth of hell,” where you can admire the unique rock formation on the edge of the ocean.
