Why Visit the National Coach Museum
Located near the Tag River in Lisbon's west, the museum exhibit center is housed in the former Royal Palace of Belém, which today serves as the official residence of the President of the Republic. Glance over the history of carriage with the help of seven interactive screens and eleven passive screens in the Museum. You'll be fascinated by learning all the valuable information about the premier collection with the help of two large projections.
History & Architecture of the National Coach Museum
The museum was inaugurated by Queen D. Amélia de Orléans and Bragança in 1905 to showcase their love for royal vehicles. The museum has a rich collection of royal vehicles from the 19th, 18th, and 17th centuries. The collection is true bliss to your eyes!
The collection, considered one of the most remarkable collections of its kind, provides visitors with a unique opportunity to understand not just the technical evolution of animal-drawn transport but also the changes in taste that can be seen in ornamentation.
There are three locations for the Coach Museum, the new building in Belém, the old Horse Riding Arena of the Royal Palace in Praça Afonso de Albuquerque in Lisbon, and the Ducal Palace in Vila Viçosa. An exceptional collection of royal vehicles is preserved in the renovated surroundings of the former Royal Riding Arena at the National Coach Museum.
