Very well done! My wife and I booked this tour as part of our 50th Anniversary trip through Italy. For this event we took the train from Sorrento to Pompeii (easy and inexpensive) and we all met together at the Tour office, which is on the 2nd floor of the train station where you arrive in Pompeii - so easy. Next, we met the tour guide and received our instructions and listening devices and walked a short distance to the entry gate. We went right through a dedicated gate (truly jumped the line) and into the site. Our guide took us on a very interesting and fact filled trek through Pompeii that ultimately finished with the most fascinating sights and restorations you could imagine. Pompeii is huge and attempting to self guide would undoubtedly be an impossible task... There's just too much to see and much is repetitive if you walk around trying to figure it out yourself! Using the Headout App and Landmarks Tours was a truly simple and enjoyable experience for me an my wife.

The guide was both extremely knowledgable and entertaining. Clearly he was an actual or wannabe actor. Some of his shtick was a bit over the top, but it was welcome on a very grey day. I thought the tour was well paced, and left me with the basic knowledge of the ruins, which is all you can expect in a 2 hour tour

So helpful to have transport between the sites. It was a little chaotically organised but it worked. Disappointingly there was no time for lunch or coffee breaks, or to visit gift shop at Pompei. I would recommend taking lunch and drinks with you. The tour guide provided at Pompei was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The pompei tour was a little rushed and I didn't feel I had time to look round the museum part properly. The guided tour only does a very small part of the site. Be prepared for a lot of walking on rough ground. If I were to do the tour again, I would miss off Herculaneum. The three site visit was too much for one day.

Top experience! The ease with which we were able to book the tour and then accompany us to make all the steps easier, and the fact that we were carried along by the wind thanks to our funny, kind and interesting guide Arianna, enabled us to visit two of the most emblematic places without worrying about anything. The price is well worth the experience, and I can't recommend it enough!

Things to know before booking your Day Trips from City A to City B

  • Total duration & timing: Standard Pompeii-only trips last about 5–6 hours door-to-door, with most Naples departures between 8:00 am and 9:00 am, affecting afternoon plans.
  • Transit & road conditions: Expect 30–40 minutes by Circumvesuviana train or 30–50 minutes by coach; choose train for flexibility, coach/minibus for simpler navigation.
  • Group size options: Shared coach tours may have large groups, while small-group formats cap around 8–18 guests, and private tours suit tailored pacing or families.
  • Expert guided insight: Many tours include a 2-hour archaeologist-led walk with headsets; budget products use audio guides or maps, so pick based on desired commentary depth.
  • Customizable add-ons: Options include full-day combos with Mount Vesuvius hikes, Herculaneum, or Amalfi Coast towns, plus variants with included lunch, tastings, or physical audioguides.
  • Accessibility & mobility note: Pompeii’s uneven cobblestones, limited shade, and Vesuvius’s natural trails require good stamina; mobility-limited visitors should favor shorter Pompeii-only routes or vehicle-based combos.

A licensed guide leads a focused walk through the ruins, so you see key highlights without worrying about trains, queues, or maps. It’s a low-stress, time-efficient way to visit, especially on busy summer or cruise days.

  • Best for: First-time visitors, families, cruise passengers wanting a hassle-free day

Helpful Tips for a Naples to Pompeii Day Trip

  • Know which train and stop to use: From Naples, ride the Circumvesuviana toward Sorrento and exit at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, directly opposite Porta Marina.
  • Sort your Pompeii ticket before leaving Naples: Recent rules require nominative, date-specific tickets, so pre-book online or with a tour to sidestep confusing onsite queues.
  • Treat the ruins like a small city, not one monument: Download the official map in Naples, circle a handful of must-sees, and follow a simple looped route.
  • Dress for Pompeii’s streets, not Naples’ pavements: High kerbs, cart ruts, and lava blocks mean grippy shoes and light clothes matter more than stylish outfits.
  • Stock up on water and snacks at Napoli Garibaldi: Inside Pompeii, fountains and the cafeteria cluster near entrances, leaving exposed stretches with nowhere to refuel.
  • Be realistic about combo trips from Naples: Pompeii plus Vesuvius or Amalfi usually means two hours inside, so pick Pompeii-only if you hate rushed visits.
  • Pair Pompeii with Naples’ Archaeological Museum on another day: You’ll see the Alexander Mosaic and Secret Cabinet collection taken from houses you walked through.
  • Treat the plaster casts and Garden of the Fugitives like a memorial: Locals appreciate quiet voices, no climbing barriers, and photos taken respectfully, not selfies.
  • Skip the trinket stalls right outside Porta Marina: If you want meaningful souvenirs, look for archaeology bookshops and replica casts back in central Naples instead.
  • If you’re docking in Naples on a cruise, book a Pompeii tour with port pickup: It’s timed to your ship, unlike trains vulnerable to delays.

  • A Pompeii‑only trip from Naples usually takes about 5–6 hours door to door: 30–40 minutes each way for transport and around 2–3 hours exploring with a guide, plus some free time. Full‑day combos that add Mount Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast, or Herculaneum typically run 8–10 hours.

  • Most guided day trips include round‑trip transport from Naples (coach or minivan), entry tickets to Pompeii, and a guided walking tour of the main sights, often with headsets. Some options add lunch, extra stops like Vesuvius or Amalfi, or an audio guide instead of a live guide—check each tour’s inclusions carefully.

  • Independent travelers often take the Circumvesuviana/EAV train from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi (about 30–40 minutes). Guided coach tours include transport and drop you near the entrance. Private transfers offer door‑to‑door comfort and flexible timing. Train is cheapest, coach tours are easiest overall, private cars are most comfortable.

  • Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially April–October and on weekends. Tours can sell out, and pre‑booked tickets help you avoid ticket‑office lines. If you’re traveling independently in peak season, securing your Pompeii ticket and preferred train or tour day in advance gives you far more certainty.

  • For Pompeii, “skip‑the‑line” usually means your tour includes pre‑booked tickets, so you bypass the regular ticket‑purchase queue and go straight to security and the turnstiles. It does not skip security checks or crowds at popular houses inside. Always check exactly what each tour’s “skip‑the‑line” promise covers.

  • You can explore independently with a map or audio guide, but Pompeii is large and can feel like a maze. Guided tours from Naples give you a clear route, stories that connect what you’re seeing, and help you use limited time well. For first‑time visitors, a guided option is usually more rewarding.

  • Combo tours are full days and typically include about 2 hours of guided time in Pompeii before continuing to Vesuvius or the coast. They’re great if you want variety and only have one spare day, but you’ll see highlights rather than every corner of Pompeii. Choose a Pompeii‑only tour if depth is your priority.

  • Many tours depart from central meeting points in Naples, such as near the main train station, historic center, or cruise port. Some include hotel pickup from selected areas, while others don’t. Cruise‑focused excursions usually start at the port. Check your voucher for the exact meeting place and pickup details.

  • Yes, many families visit Pompeii and kids often enjoy the “lost city” feel. However, expect lots of walking, uneven stones, and limited shade. Family‑friendly or small‑group tours with engaging guides work best. In summer, aim for early starts, bring plenty of water and snacks, and be ready to shorten the visit if needed.

  • Pompeii has some accessible routes, but much of the site involves uneven cobblestones, high curbs, and steps. Older travelers who can manage steady walking usually cope with a slower‑paced or private tour. For significant mobility issues or wheelchairs, plan a shorter visit along marked accessible paths and avoid demanding combo itineraries.

  • Wear sturdy, closed‑toe shoes with good grip; the stones can be uneven and slippery. Light clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essential in warmer months because shade is limited. Bring a refillable water bottle and perhaps a light jacket in cooler seasons. A small daypack is usually fine; large bags may need to be checked.

  • Expect several kilometers of walking on ancient stone streets with steps, kerbs, and occasional steep sections. Even short tours mean a lot of standing and walking. There are some smoother paths, but most routes are not stroller‑ or wheelchair‑friendly. Comfortable shoes and realistic expectations about fitness and stamina are important when choosing your tour.

  • Many Pompeii‑only tours do not include meals, instead giving you free time to buy lunch or snacks near the site. Some full‑day options, especially those combining Pompeii with Vesuvius or the Amalfi Coast, include a set lunch. Always check whether your chosen tour includes food or just leaves time for you to eat independently.

  • Pompeii tours usually run in light rain, though stones may be slippery. For combo trips, access to Mount Vesuvius can be closed at short notice due to weather or safety rules. In that case, operators may adjust the itinerary or offer partial refunds, depending on their policy—check the tour’s cancellation and contingency terms before booking.
