Headquarters for the religious and military orders of the Temple of Christ, Tomar Castle, and the Convent of Christ were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Apart from being one the best amongst the rare existing examples of the rotunda-shaped church, The Charola is known to symbolize the medieval European world of the Crusades and the defense of the faith. The Manueline window present constitutes the first synthesis between European and Oriental art. It's reserved in its original decorative grammar.
The architecture here evokes a vast repertoire of European art, embodied in styles that the passing centuries have brought to the edifice. It is known to be one of the bigger convents in Europe. Also, its main cloister is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. The rebirth of this convent itself was considered when the classification of this monastic complex was done. The region of Tomar is known to offer a rich heritage that goes beyond its rich architecture. It is known for its fairs, festivals, gastronomy with unique flavors, and high-quality craftsmanship. These are known to be symbols of their work and cultural expressions of the communities. Discover and savor everything the region of Tomar has to offer with a visit to this monumental complex!
