About Museu e Igreja da Misericórdia do Porto

MMIPO combines two experiences in one stop: a museum about Porto’s charitable and hospital history and access to the attached Igreja da Misericórdia. Instead of focusing on a single blockbuster artwork, it uses period rooms, documents, religious art, silverware, and multimedia to explain how the Misericórdia operated hospitals, orphanages, and other services. Its Rua das Flores location also makes it easy to fit into an Old Town walk.

Did you know?

Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto was founded in 1499, and the museum presents the history of an institution that still operates today as a social assistance provider.

Why visit Museu e Igreja da Misericórdia do Porto?

Former Santa Casa Headquarters on Rua das Flores

MMIPO occupies the Casa da Rua das Flores, the historical headquarters of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto. The institution was founded in 1499, and the museum route uses this setting to explain centuries of charity, healthcare, and religious life through period spaces, objects, and documents.

Plan your visit

Main Entrance - Rua das Flores

This is the only clearly documented public entrance, located on Rua das Flores, 15, at the former Misericórdia headquarters building in Porto’s historic centre. All visitors use this door, whether buying tickets on arrival or showing a mobile or printed voucher for scanning. Reception and the ticket desk are immediately inside, and any bag check or entry control also happens here rather than at a separate security line. Visitor reports suggest minor or no queue in most cases. Look for the façade signed as Museu da Misericórdia do Porto on the pedestrian street between São Bento and Ribeira. Because the building is historic, exact step-free access details are not clearly documented online.
