As your tour begins quite early, you will arrive at Montserrat long before the monastery and basilica get crowded. As you travel to the spiritual sanctuary from Barcelona in a private vehicle, your guide will explain the significance and history of the place. The infectious mystical aura of the mountain-top monastery is almost immediately apparent when you step out of your bus. Take a moment to soak in the breathtaking view of the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean, and the magnificent Gothic architecture of the Benedictine monastery.
Head into the basilica to see the famous Black Madonna of Montserrat, a Romanesque wooden statue that is fabled to have been unmovable, thus forcing the Benedictine monks of the time to build the basilica around it. After the guided tour, you will have some time to explore the area on your own! You can choose to go on a short hike or take the cable car through the mountains. Alternatively, if you are more fascinated by the history and culture of the place, you can visit the local museum of contemporary art. Sample some of the local delicacies before heading back to Barcelona in your air-conditioned bus.
