Castelo de São Jorge is an absolutely beautiful and historic castle that offers some of the most breathtaking views of Lisbon. Walking along the ancient castle walls and exploring its rich history was an unforgettable experience. The views of the red rooftops, Alfama, and the Tagus River are simply spectacular. We loved all the peacocks that roam the castle as well! A perfect place to take photos, learn about Portugal’s history, and enjoy the beauty of Lisbon. Highly recommend visiting this incredible landmark — definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal!

Easy to buy tickets and find entrance! We absolutely loved visiting São Jorge Castle! The views over Lisbon were incredible and honestly worth the visit alone. We had so much fun walking around the castle walls, exploring the different areas, and taking in all of the history. It was one of those places that really made us feel like we were experiencing Lisbon rather than just sightseeing. Such a beautiful spot and definitely one of the highlights of our trip!

Although the two queuing systems was confusing we made it into both church and cloisters and it was well worth the wait. What an amazing building. I had ordered audio guides as part of the online booking but these were not offered or even obvious to us where to ask for them. The cloisters were fabulous and I have since researched them myself but possibly not to the level of a proud national treasure.

A cloister of indescribable beauty, more like lace than masonry. PAY ATTENTION to the entrances. The queue to enter at your booked time forms much, much earlier and can be 100 meters or more, in full sun, so plan ahead. On the positive side, once your time slot arrives, it moves very quickly. A visit that is definitely worth the effort.

The architecture is beautiful, but the queue to enter in the blazing sun (32 degrees in the shade) was terrible, with a waiting time of over an hour. 20 euros for a ticket and we only got to see the courtyard and a part of the church. So, we waited over an hour to get in for just 30 minutes of sightseeing. That is why I have mixed feelings.

The courtyard is indeed very beautiful with great architecture, but still quite small. The value for money just wasn't right for us. But apparently, restoration work is also underway at the moment (as of September 2026).

I liked the palace very much; it's a pity about the furniture, objects, photos, pictures, weapons, dresses, books, letters, and paintings, and all of its gardens, caves, and wells 🤩
