Witness history by the sea at Miramare Castle
Imagine a storybook castle perched on a rocky cliff, overlooking the pristine blue waters of the Gulf of Trieste. That’s Miramare Castle, an 18th-century structure built by Carl Junker for Duke Maximilian of Habsburg. The staircases lined with wooden figurines, high ceilings decked with intricate chandeliers, and portraits of Dukes and Duchesses, will transport you back to the royal times. Explore over 20 rooms, including Maximilian’s Chambers decorated with paintings, each telling a story of his life and the castle itself. Then, slip into the music room, where Archduchess Charlotte often poured her heart into the fortepiano. After Maximilian's tragic demise in 1867, the castle hosted many Habsburg members throughout the 20th century.
Explore the botanical gardens and the small castle
The library decked with tall bookshelves, and the rooms of the Archduchess with their tapestry of light-blue silk, offer a glimpse into the lives of its royal residents. Be sure to glance beyond every window and catch the scenic beauty of the Gulf of Trieste! Outside, you’ll find the 54-acre baroque-style botanical garden with plants collected by the Duke on his travels abroad. The Castelletto or the small castle served as the royal couple's temporary residence during the main castle’s construction. Don't miss the castle’s charming "little port," and be sure to peek into the throne room, recently restored to its original grandeur.
