Standing on the top of the promontory of Grignano near Trieste, Miramare Castle is a former Habsburg residence. Built between 1856 and 1860, the castle was home to Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. The stunning white castle overlooks the Gulf of Trieste and is surrounded by 54 acres of seashore park. There is an impressive variety of plants here, many of which were specially chosen by the archduke during his travels around the world as admiral of the Austrian Military Marine. After Maximilian passed away in 1867, and Charlotte left for Belgium, the castle continued to serve as an occasional home to the Habsburg family until the 20th century.
The architecture of the castle is a blend of Gothic, Medieval, and Renaissance elements. Explore the over 20 rooms in the castle including Maximilian’s Chambers, the Throne Room, and Charlotte’s Music Room. These rooms still house original furnishings, ornaments, and objects that date back to mid 19th century. Wander through the pristine Miramare Castle Park, including the greenhouses, the stables, and the miniature 'Castelletto'. The stables have been recently restored and are now used for temporary exhibitions. The Castelletto retains part of its original decoration on the first floor, a vestige of the Austrian Empire.
