Opera

Turandot

Duration

3 hrs 2 mins

Witness a revival of Puccini’s final masterpiece, as renowned director and producer Franco Zeffirelli, brings the opera back to life with a supremely talented cast at its helm.

  • A masterpiece, and the final work by Giacomo Puccini, Turandot is one of the most widely performed operas in the world. It features an unusual and inventive score, using the orchestra and chorus in innovative ways. Although the final scene was completed by composer Franco Alfano, the appeal is still recognizably Puccini. The large orchestra uses a variety of instruments, including bass, xylophone, harps, celesta, and an organ. Chinese elements and themes can be heard in the score, and the imperial anthem in Act II stands out. The tenor’s song of triumph, ‘Nessun Dorma’ is breathtaking to hear and the sheer melodic beauty of Puccini’s composition is guaranteed to leave you awestruck. Franco Zeffirelli, in charge of directing the production, was a renowned director and producer of films, operas, and television shows. Most famous for his 1968 film, Romeo and Juliet, for which he received an Academy Award nomination, several of his operatic productions have gone on to become classics.

    The Story

In the ancient city of Peking, several suitors come to win the hand of a beautiful princess named Turandot. Any prince who seeks to marry Turandot, however, must answer three riddles. If he fails to answer any one of them, he will be executed. The Prince of Persia is the most recent suitor and is scheduled to be executed during moonrise. The onlookers include Calaf, an old man, Timur, and the slave girl, Liu. As Turandot wordlessly orders the execution of the prince, Calaf is transfixed by her beauty and decides to win her hand. Liu and Timur are shocked and attempt to discourage Calaf but to no avail.

When Turnadot poses the three riddles to Calaf, he answers without hesitation and wins her hand. Turnadot, however, is distraught. Hoping to win her love, Calaf tells her that if she can learn his name by dawn, he will forfeit his life. Will Turandot uncover the stranger’s name? Can she finally experience emotion and love?
