Straight from his Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel , Michael Chabon's beloved characters Joe Kavalier and Sam Clay are transformed from paper to the opera—two immigrant cousins in 1940s New York who invent an anti-fascist comic hero reflecting Jewish hopes and fears as the Nazis closed in.

Now at the Met, director Bartlett Sher teams with composer Mason Bates to launch the 2025‑26 season, backed by baritone Andrzej Filończyk and tenor Miles Mykkanen under Maestro Yannick Nézet‑Séguin.

Bates’s eclectic score moves from Eastern‑European folk to swing‑style big‑band jazz and neon‑bright electronic comic fantasy, mirroring Chabon’s shifting worlds in an audio tapestry.

With immersive staging by 59 Productions—towering sets, lush projections by Jenny Melville & Mark Grimmer—the split worlds of Prague, New York, and comic‑book fantasy come vividly to life.
