I loved exploring Istanbul and its amazing sites, which are steeped in history and culture—and especially those hidden gems like the Basilica Cistern, which really impressed me because it’s underground. It’s just a few steps from Hagia Sophia. We bought our tickets through this app to avoid the lines, since these places are always crowded. Plus, since we happened to be there on rainy days, it’s really annoying to stand in the rain waiting to get in, so I recommend arriving early with your tickets already in hand. We got in right away—we were among the first—and that meant we could take photos freely and enjoy the place.

The skip the line ticket for the Bascilica Cistern was definitely worth it! We basically walked right in past a long line of people waiting to buy tickets on site. I would recommend taking a screenshot of the ticket barcodes in case your WiFi is iffy. The cistern itself was beautiful and the audio guide gave us plenty of interesting facts about its history.

We got in without waiting in line or waiting at all. The basilica is worth a visit, despite the ticket price, because all the alternatives are ten times smaller and won’t leave you with the same impression as the largest basilica. We arrived right when it opened, which was perfect because there weren’t many people there.

We really appreciated not having to wait in line at all, and it was very easy to buy the tickets ahead of time! I will definitely use Headout again in the future.

Visiting the Basilica Cistern was one of the highlights of our time in Istanbul. The experience was truly impressive from the moment we stepped inside. Walking through the massive underground space, surrounded by beautifully lit columns and reflections in the water, feels almost magical. The atmosphere is unique and very different from anything else in the city. One of the best parts was that we were able to enter without waiting in line, which made the visit even more enjoyable and relaxed. Once inside, you can take your time exploring, appreciating the architecture, and seeing details like the famous Medusa head columns. It’s an incredible historical place and absolutely worth visiting. Highly recommended for anyone coming to Istanbul.

Headout's customer service is absolutely terrible. There's no way to contact them after they mistakenly sent us tickets that didn't work. The claim that you can skip the line at Galata Tower is a lie. There's only one line! So in that regard, the benefits they advertise aren't even true. As for the palace, the Harem is the only part worth visiting to gain access, but they don’t explain how to do it very well either. They just send you to a location and that’s it. My review of this company is very negative, and I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.

It wasn’t until after a long wait and thanks to the wonderful assistance of the staff at Hagia Sophia that I received the missing entry code for this remarkable mosque from the support team. I had already booked the combo tickets online two days earlier. Since I only had one day in Istanbul, this was very frustrating. I received the code for the Sunken Palace in time. Both attractions were fantastic, and the visit was worth it despite the delay.

    Getting started

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled time and keep your mobile ticket and a valid photo ID ready. A staff member will meet you at the entrance and help you check in. You’ll breeze past the ticket queue, but do note that all visitors must go through a security check.

    Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric spots—a vast, ancient underground reservoir built in the 6th century. It’s best known for its forest of marble columns, the serene reflections in the water, and, of course, the mysterious Medusa heads hidden at the far end.

Depending on the ticket you choose, an expert guide will accompany you through the cistern. You’ll get the backstory behind the Medusa heads, learn how this shadowy space once supplied water to emperors, and hear quirky details you’d probably miss on your own.

Prefer to explore at your own pace? You can use the included audio app, available in five languages, to guide you through the cistern. If you want to see more of Istanbul, upgrade your ticket to include a guided tour of Hagia Sophia, an architectural masterpiece known for its massive dome and golden mosaics.

  • What to bring

    • Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip—the stone floor can be damp and slightly slippery.

    • Bring a light jacket or shawl; it stays cool underground even in warm weather.

    • Carry wired headphones if you plan to use an audio guide app—Bluetooth often struggles underground.

    • Have your phone fully charged for photos and the audio guide (there are no charging stations inside).

    What's not allowed

    • Flash photography is not permitted.

    • Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed due to space and safety concerns.

    • Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited inside the cistern.

    Accessibility

    • The site is partially accessible; there is a lift near the exit on Alemdar Street near the tram line, but the walking path inside may be uneven in places.

    • Wheelchair users may need assistance, especially around corners or where the lighting is low.

    • There are no elevators inside the cistern, and seating is extremely limited.

    Additional information

    • Your ticket allows you to skip the ticket queue, but all visitors must go through a security check.

    • Arrive early in the morning or visit in the evening to avoid crowds from cruise ship tours.

    • Don’t miss the Medusa heads tucked into the far corner. Walk around them to see both angles.

    • The exit leads out to a different street than the entrance; take note of your location before entering.

    • The lighting is intentionally dim—give your eyes a moment to adjust for better visibility and photos

    • Your voucher will be emailed to you shortly.
    • Display the voucher on your mobile phone with a valid photo ID at the starting point.
    • Please check your final voucher for the starting point details & specific instructions.
