About Hungarian State Opera
The Hungarian State Opera is one of Budapest’s most important cultural institutions, pairing a 19th-century neo-Renaissance interior with an active program of opera and ballet. Main entrance (Andrássy Avenue)
Located at 22 Andrássy Avenue, the Main Entrance is directly opposite the Opera metro station (M1 line) and flanked by statues of Ferenc Erkel and Franz Liszt. This is the primary access point for all visitors, including those attending performances and guided tours. The entrance is fully wheelchair accessible, with step-free access, ramps, and modern lifts installed during the 2022 renovation. Accessible ticket counters and cloakroom are available just inside the foyer.
- Most opera and ballet performances begin at 7pm, with occasional matinees at 3pm or 4pm. Doors open 30 to 45 minutes before showtime.
- On days with evening shows, visits are usually allowed until the end of the first interval, and ticket sales pause about 30 minutes before the performance, when counters serve only that evening’s guests.
- Arrive at least 10 minutes early for tours, as late entry is not permitted, and note that for performances, latecomers are admitted only during the intermission.
A complimentary cloakroom is available for all visitors. Coats and large bags must be checked before entering the auditorium.
Toilets are available for guests throughout the Opera House.
An information desk is located at the main entrance for tour check-in and visitor assistance.
The Opera House is fully wheelchair accessible, with ramps, lifts, and accessible seating available after the 2022 renovation.
Elevator access is available to all public floors, including balconies and accessible seating areas.
