There are castles that tell you about a country’s past, and then there’s Guimarães Castle, woven into the story of Portugal itself.
Getting started
Head to Guimarães Castle and present your ticket at the entrance for access to the monument. From here, explore the castle grounds and surviving fortifications at your own pace, taking time to look closely at the walls, battlements and medieval architectural details that have survived centuries of change.
What to expect
Guimarães Castle began in the 10th century, when Countess Mumadona Dias ordered a fortification to protect the nearby monastery. It was later expanded and remodelled under figures including Count Henry and King Dinis, eventually becoming one of the defining monuments of Guimarães and Portugal’s early history.
