Immerse yourself in the ancient and peculiar history of one of Florence's most popular monuments on this exclusive guided visit. The foundation of this history was laid in 1418 with the announcement of a contest for an ideal dome design. The prize? 200 gold florins and eternal fame.
The leading architects of that age flocked to Florence to present their ideas. Known for solving complex problems of engineering, Filippo Brunelleschi emerged as the winner with Lorenzo Ghiberti as the co-superintendent. With the project having been considered impossible by several engineers, the deserved victory was hard-won and fraught with obstacles. March 25, 1436 witnessed the finished Cathedral being consecrated by Pope Eugenius IV and a group of cardinals for the Feast of the Annunciation. Since then, the Dome has been a proud symbol of the Florentine Renaissance.
