Your Experience
Your Experience
Meet your guide at the entrance to Neapolis where you'll get a brief overview of the city’s history. Begin your stroll by the monuments in chronological order, from the laboring quarries to the lavish artistic and religious spaces in Syracuse. Gain a deeper appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage in the Mediterranean and lasting memories of its natural beauty.
Walk Among the Ancient Quarries
The Latomie are ancient quarries where the city's building material was extracted for centuries. Once a place of heavy labor and imprisonment, it is now a serenely verdant spot. See the Ear of Dionysus, a legendary cave known for its unique shape and incredible acoustics. Hear about the legend of the tyrant Dionysius, who used the cave to eavesdrop on his prisoners!
Theatrics Across Cultures
Continue along the Cave of Cordari, a place once used by hemp artisans to create ropes. Then, reach the Greek Theatre, one of the largest in the Mediterranean. See the Fountain of Nymphaeum and enjoy panoramic views of the Grand Harbor from the upper terrace. Follow your guide to the monumental Altar of Hieron II. This was the largest stone altar from the Hellenistic period – now all that remains is the base structure.
Then, head to the Roman Amphitheatre, the most recent construction at Neapolis. Learn about the Roman phase and the gladiatorial games as you walk by the well-preserved access portals and 15,000 seats. If your tour is in Italian, you could attend the show, Il mito di Aretusa.
