About Grotte Cosquer

Cosquer Méditerranée recreates a submerged prehistoric cave that ordinary visitors can never enter in reality, giving it a very different focus from a conventional archaeology museum. The ride-based format follows the original cave’s layout, including marine animals and hand stencils, then connects the art to the Calanques coastline, sea-level rise, and Henri Cosquer’s underwater discovery.

Did you know?

The real Cosquer Cave was discovered by professional diver Henri Cosquer in 1985, but its location stayed secret until an accident in 1991 forced official reporting.

Why visit Grotte Cosquer?

More Than 500 Reproduced Ice Age Figures

The replica brings together more than 500 reproduced parietal figures from the original cave. You see horses, ibex, marine animals, and hand stencils reconstructed from high-resolution recordings and 3D modeling, letting you study art that survives in a natural cave now closed to the public.

Main Villa Méditerranée Entrance (Esplanade J4)

Located on Esplanade J4 between MuCEM and the sea, this is the only public entrance for Cosquer Méditerranée and sits at the base of the cantilevered Villa Méditerranée building over the water basin. All visitors use it, including timed-ticket holders, school groups, and organized groups. Reception and ticketing are inside the building, and tickets are checked at internal control points before visitors descend to the replica cave level. Bag checks are part of the entry process. Arrive about 15 minutes before your slot, as there may be a lobby or holding-area wait before boarding the exploration modules. The building includes elevators, though detailed step-free routing specific to Cosquer operations is not clearly published.
