Kyoto Ikebana Flower Arrangement Experience

Your one-hour experience combines hands-on ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, with a tour of Tondaya, a historic Kyoto machiya that preserves the character of traditional Japanese architecture.

Getting started

Your experience takes place at Nishijin Lifestyle Museum Tondaya, a traditional Kyoto townhouse built in 1885. Once home to a kimono wholesaler, the property is now open as a museum dedicated to traditional Kyoto lifestyles and culture. Your booking includes admission to Tondaya, a tour of the machiya, and the flowers fee for your ikebana activity.

What to expect

Ikebana flower arrangement

Learn ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of arranging flowers, with guidance from an experienced ikebana master. Rather than simply arranging flowers decoratively, this practice places emphasis on the artistic expression behind each arrangement. You'll work with seasonal flowers and create an arrangement that reflects your individual style.

Features

• Learn traditional Japanese flower arrangement from an experienced ikebana master

• Arrange seasonal flowers and express your individual style

• Enjoy a hands-on cultural activity during your one-hour visit

• Flowers fee included in your experience

Nishijin Lifestyle Museum Tondaya

Explore Tondaya, a traditional machiya that offers insight into Kyoto's historic residential architecture and lifestyle. Built in 1885, the property was registered as a National Cultural Heritage site in 1999 and designated a Structure of Landscape Importance in Kyoto in 2007. Your experience includes a tour of the machiya, complementing your flower arrangement lesson with a look at the historic setting where it takes place.

Features

• Tour a traditional Kyoto machiya built in 1885

• Discover a property featuring six traditional gardens, three tea rooms, two wells, three storehouses, and a Noh stage

• Learn about a historic building now operated as Nishijin Lifestyle Museum

• Admission fee and machiya tour included

Tondaya's layout reflects the design of a traditional Kyoto townhouse, with a workshop at the front and living spaces toward the rear. Its interior gardens, tea room, and space for Noh performances reflect elements of traditional Japanese architecture and cultural life. The property provides context for your activity without taking the focus away from your own flower arrangement.

As you move between the lesson and the machiya tour, you'll experience two aspects of Japanese culture in one visit: the practice of ikebana and the preservation of a historic Kyoto home. The activity lasts approximately one hour, including the machiya tour, so both elements form part of the same experience.
