Discover the deep tradition of sumo, a sport practiced in Japan for over 1,400 years. On this rare tour, you’ll enter an authentic sumo stable—normally closed to the public—and observe the wrestlers’ intense morning practice up close. Feel their power, discipline, and spirit as you witness serious training that reflects the history and values of sumo.
Before practice begins, your guide will share cultural tips and important etiquette to help you fully appreciate the experience. If you’re lucky, you may even take a photo with a sumo wrestler after training. A special sumo information document is included to deepen your understanding.
What's not allowed
- Pets are not permitted on this experience.
- Children under 12 years old are not allowed inside the sumo stable.
- Infants must not sit on laps, and infant seats are not available.
- Disruptive behavior or disrespect toward sumo stable rules may result in denied entry without refund.
- Only tatami areas are accessible during the experience; all other areas within the sumo stable are off-limits.
- If you leave the sumo stable before the end of practice, re-entry is not permitted.
- Photography during practice is subject to each sumo stable’s policy and may sometimes not be allowed.
Accessibility
- This experience is not wheelchair or stroller accessible, and some locations may not be accessible for those with mobility needs.
- Most sumo stables do not provide chairs, so guests are expected to sit directly on tatami (straw mat flooring).
Additional information
- Arrive on time, as late arrivals cannot join the tour and no refunds or rescheduling are provided for missed tours.
- Seating is first-come, first-served, and later arrivals may be seated farther from the front.
- The group may be divided and assigned to different sumo stables depending on participant numbers.
- Sumo stables may cancel or adjust practice schedules at the last minute; a full refund will be provided if the stable cancels.
- The length of the practice session may vary, which may cause the tour to end earlier or later than estimated.
- Restroom access may not be available during practice, so please use facilities before the tour begins.
- Reservation changes or requests on the day of the tour cannot be accommodated.
- The tour time or date may change depending on sumo stable availability.
- Dress appropriately for the weather, as temperatures can reach up to 40°C/110°F in summer and drop to -5°C/20°F in winter.
