Meet your guide near the main entrance of the Hungarian State Opera House, where a quick ticket check is followed by an introduction to the building’s history. From here, your guide leads the group inside to begin exploring this Neo-Renaissance landmark from the heart outward.

The Hungarian State Opera House

Opened in 1884, the Hungarian State Opera House is Hungary’s first and only purpose-built opera venue. Designed by acclaimed architect Miklós Ybl, it is one of Budapest’s most visited cultural landmarks and has hosted world premieres, celebrated composers, and legendary performers across generations.

Neo-Renaissance architecture & artistic craftsmanship

What’s not allowed

Entry to the auditorium is not permitted during rehearsals or live performances.

Guided tours are suspended during live performances.

For security reasons, large bags, suitcases, and oversized luggage cannot be taken inside the Opera House.

Pets are not permitted, except for registered service animals.

Flash photography, tripods, and professional filming equipment are not allowed inside the Opera House.

Accessibility

The Opera House offers full wheelchair access, including barrier-free entry points, lifts to several levels (including the third floor), designated seating, and accessible restroom facilities.

As the main entrance has steps, you will enter via a side entrance, and it is recommended that you contact the venue ahead of time to confirm seating arrangements.

Additional information

Guided tours last around 60 minutes and depart daily at 1:30pm, 3pm, and 4:30pm, so please arrive on time for your chosen tour slot.
