Curious about what’s really up there? Explore Tenerife's world of astronomy by day, then put your newfound knowledge to work under Teide's starry skies.
Getting started
Begin your astronomic tour with departure from either the South area or the North area of Tenerife, depending on your chosen option. You travel in transportation for small groups, heading up to the Teide Observatory at about 2,390–2,400 meters above sea level. On arrival, you enter the Teide Observatory using your reservation confirmation and prepare to meet your Starlight guide.
What to expect
Teide Observatory
Teide Observatory is where modern astrophysics in the Canary Islands began. Set up in Izaña in the early 1960s, its first professional telescope arrived in 1964, followed by its first solar telescope in 1969. Today, the Observatory is dedicated largely to studying the Sun and houses some of Europe's leading solar telescopes.
Features
-
Think like an astronomer: Learn about the Canary Islands' exceptional skies, the Observatory's telescopes, and the research carried out by the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics.
-
See the Sun in action: Use solar telescopes to observe sunspots and solar flares and discover what our closest star looks like through specialist equipment.
-
Explore a working telescope: Go inside a nocturnal telescope and learn about its operation and the history behind this impressive piece of astronomical equipment.
-
Watch the National Park after dark: See Teide's volcanic landscape take on completely different colors at twilight before darkness turns your attention skyward.
-
Find your way around the stars: Learn to orient yourself using celestial objects and discover the mythology behind constellations while exploring the night sky through professional long-range telescopes.
Wrapping up
After the guided visit and telescope observations conclude, you rejoin your small-group transport for the return journey to your original departure area, leaving the high-altitude site behind once the night-time activities are complete.
