An unforgettable experience!! The best way to experience Santorini! Breathtaking views, delicious food, and an exceptional crew. If there’s one activity that’s absolutely worth doing in Santorini, it’s this catamaran tour. From start to finish, it was simply a perfect experience. As soon as we boarded, the crew welcomed us with big smiles and welcome drinks. They were professional, attentive to every detail, and immediately made us feel pampered and safe. We sailed along the caldera, stopping at strategic spots away from the crowds. It was fantastic to be able to swim in the waters off Santorini and snorkel near the volcanic beaches (Red Beach and White Beach). The views from the sea offer a completely different—and even more spectacular—perspective than those from the mainland. And what about the food? People often worry that lunches included in tourist excursions will be mediocre, but here we were blown away. The barbecue prepared fresh on board was delicious: a delicious Greek salad, tzatziki, and traditional side dishes. All accompanied by drinks. We relaxed on the comfortable cushions of the catamaran’s bow net… it’s a memory we’ll carry in our hearts forever. I highly recommend this excursion for couples, families, or groups of friends. A special thank you to the entire staff for making this day the best part of our vacation. Five well-deserved stars!

My daughter and I went on the cruise on our last day in Santorini. We really enjoyed both the itinerary and the helpfulness of our guide (Eleonora), who accompanied us throughout the day, explaining everything we saw without ever being intrusive. I definitely recommend this experience to anyone spending a few days in Santorini.

A very pleasant cruise aboard a catamaran (the sails aren’t up). The explanations are given in English. Swim stops (including one in sulfur-rich water—be careful, your swimsuits will turn orange) The BBQ meal is nice. Unlimited wine, beer, or soft drinks. Very friendly staff. Now, the waters aren’t quite like those in Corsica! It’s beautiful, but not exactly exceptional. The magical moment is watching the sunset from aboard the boat.

What you get with Santorini Volcano tours

Santorini volcano tours are boat trips to Nea Kameni, where you hike across the volcanic crater, then swim near Palea Kameni's warm sulfur springs. Shorter options cover just the volcano and hot springs in around three hours. Longer tours add Thirassia, dinner, or sunset near Oia. Worth knowing upfront: the hot springs are warm, not hot, and reaching them involves an open-water swim from the boat. If you want swimming, food, and views without the hike, a catamaran cruise is a different kind of day.

Overview of volcano tours in Santorini

  • Tour formats: You can choose a half‑day volcano cruise covering Nea Kameni and the hot springs, or a full‑day route that adds Thirassia and, on some tours, sunset views near Oia
  • Duration: Shared‑boat volcano tours typically run from about 3 hours for the express route up to roughly 10–11 hours when you add Thirassia and an Oia sunset extension.
  • Core experience: Most tours include a guided 30–45 minute hike up Nea Kameni’s crater, a swim stop in Palea Kameni’s warm sulfur springs, and caldera sailing between the islands, with Thirassia free time on the longer routes.
  • Reality check: You won’t see flowing lava or spa‑style pools. The springs are warmer than the open sea but not truly hot, and the day feels more like a volcanic hike and swim than a luxury cruise.
  • Meals & drinks: Classic volcano and hot‑springs cruises focus on the activities and rarely include meals, while full‑day, sunset, or catamaran options may add a buffet, BBQ, or simple onboard dining with local wine or beer.
  • Departure points: Tours usually depart from the Old Port of Fira, Athinios Port, or Vlychada Marina. Some tickets include shared hotel transfers so you don’t have to arrange your own transport.
  • Good fit if... This suits travelers who want to get off the boat, walk on an active volcanic island, and swim in open water and who are comfortable with a moderate, exposed hike in the sun.
  • Less suited for: It’s a harder day for anyone with knee or mobility issues, non‑swimmers hoping to enter the springs, or visitors expecting a spa‑like soak rather than a short volcanic swim.
  • Safety in brief: Local crews and guides keep groups on marked trails and monitor conditions; the hot‑springs swim is optional, and you can always stay on the boat if you prefer.

Know before you book a Santorini volcano tour

  • It's not what you're picturing. You won't see flowing lava. Nea Kameni is black volcanic rock with steam vents and sulfur patches, more lunar than dramatic, and the hot springs are warm, not spa-hot.
  • There's a fee most tickets don't cover. Entrance to Nea Kameni usually costs around €5, paid in cash on arrival, and isn't included in most tour tickets.
  • The hike is easier to underestimate than overestimate. It's only 30 to 45 minutes, but there's no shade, and midday heat in July and August makes it feel longer than the distance suggests. Morning departures are noticeably more comfortable.
  • The hot springs swim is optional and in open water. You enter the sea from the boat and swim 50 to 100 meters to reach the springs. Non-swimmers can stay onboard and still enjoy the caldera views.
  • Boats can feel crowded in peak season. Larger traditional boats can feel packed in July and August. If space matters to you, look at the catamaran or a smaller-group option.
  • Weather can change the plan. Tours may be rerouted or rescheduled in strong winds or rough seas. Most operators offer a reschedule or refund rather than a flat cancellation.

Volcano hike or caldera cruise: which Santorini tour fits your day

I want the actual volcano hike

Best option: Santorini 3-Hour Cruise to Volcano & Hot Springs

This is the most direct volcano-focused option: you hike Nea Kameni’s crater, swim near Palea Kameni’s hot springs, and get a structured caldera route without paying for a longer day.

  • Duration: Around 3 hours
  • Stops & activities: Guided hike on Nea Kameni, swim near the Palea Kameni hot springs, caldera sailing
  • Inclusions: English and Greek-speaking guide, volcano and hot springs visit
  • What to watch for: The Nea Kameni entrance fee (€5) may be extra, so carry cash. The hike is exposed and rocky, and there is less downtime unless you skip the swim or sit out part of the activity.

I want the classic full volcano route

Best option: Volcano, Hot Springs & Thirassia Day Cruise

This gives you the standard Santorini volcano day: crater hike, hot springs swim, caldera sailing, and time on Thirassia without moving into premium catamaran pricing.

  • Duration: Around 6 hours, longer if transfers or Oia sunset extension are included
  • Stops & activities: Nea Kameni crater hike, Palea Kameni hot springs swim, free time on Thirassia
  • Inclusions: Professional guide, shared transfers on select options, cruise taxes and fees depending on ticket
  • What to watch for: It is a longer, more active day. Reaching Manolas village on Thirassia can involve a steep climb, but you can stay near the port if you want an easier stop.

I want volcano, sunset and dinner

Best option: Santorini Volcano Sunset Dinner Cruise

Better if you want the volcano route to feel more like an evening experience, with dinner, wine, and sunset views layered onto the core caldera stops.

  • Duration: Around 6–8 hours, depending on transfers and sunset format
  • Stops & activities: Volcano visit, hot springs swim, Thirassia stop or sail-by, dinner onboard, sunset viewing
  • Inclusions: Hotel transfers, expert local guide, buffet dinner, and local wine on select dinner cruises
  • What to watch for: A higher price does not always mean more volcano time. Check whether sunset is from the boat, near Oia, or part of a transfer-based extension.

I do not care about hiking

Best option:

Choose this if you want swimming, food, drinks, Red Beach and White Beach views, and a smoother day on the water instead of a rocky crater hike.

  • Duration: Around 5 hours
  • Stops & activities: Red Beach, White Beach, hot springs swim, Mesa Pigadia or caldera swim stops depending on the route
  • Inclusions: Hotel transfers, BBQ meal, drinks, snorkeling gear, towels or blankets on select cruises
  • What to watch for: This is not the best option if your main goal is the Nea Kameni volcano hike. Catamarans may include hot springs or caldera views, but they are usually swim-and-meal cruises, not true volcano tours.

What happens on a Santorini volcano tour

Boarding at your assigned port

You meet your group at either the Old Port of Fira or Athinios Port, depending on your ticket. After check-in and a short safety briefing, you board the caique and sail out into the caldera. Arrive 20–30 minutes early to account for cable car queues or traffic

Nea Kameni crater hike

At Nea Kameni you disembark and follow your guide along a rocky, exposed trail to the crater rim. The hike takes roughly 30–45 minutes, with loose volcanic gravel underfoot and almost no shade. Closed shoes, water, and a hat make a real difference in midday heat.

Thirassia island stop (full‑day tours)

On longer routes you continue to Thirassia and disembark at the small harbor. Most people stay near the waterfront cafés and tavernas for lunch and views. If you want to reach Manolas village, be ready for a steep climb of around 200–300 steps up the hillside.

Free time on Thirassia

You usually get one to two hours of unscheduled time on Thirassia. Most visitors have a simple meal at harbor tavernas, walk short paths along the waterfront, and take photos of the caldera. If you tackle the stairs to Manolas, expect to spend most of your stop on the climb and a quick village visit.

Onboard and island meals

Basic volcano cruises keep food simple: you eat at tavernas on Thirassia or back in Fira. Dinner‑cruise and sunset options add a Greek buffet or BBQ served onboard, paired with local white wine. Drinks outside the set menu and tavernas on Thirassia are usually paid separately in cash.

Caldera sailback and sunset

After the final stop, the boat cruises back through the caldera past cliffs and villages, giving you relaxed deck time for photos. On sunset products you stay out into the evening, watching the sky change from the boat or, on some tours, transferring to Oia for the last light before returning.

How physically demanding is a Santorini volcano activity tour

The volcano hike

Difficulty: Moderate (required)

The Nea Kameni trail is 30 to 45 minutes over loose volcanic gravel with a steady uphill. Little to no shade throughout. July and August midday departures feel much more demanding than the distance suggests. Closed shoes, water and a hat make a real difference. Morning tours are more comfortable.

The hot springs swim

Difficulty: Easy (optional)

To reach the springs, you enter from the boat and swim around 50 to 100 meters of open water. There's no walk-in beach entry. Non-swimmers can stay on the boat. The water is warm rather than hot.

The Thirassia village walk

Difficulty: Easy to Strenuous (optional)

Staying near the port means cafés, tavernas and waterfront views; this keeps the experience flat and easy. Reaching Manolas village involves around 200 to 300 steep steps. Skip the climb if knees, heat, or time are a concern.

Who this day suits
Most volcano tours involve a rocky crater walk and an optional open-water swim. Longer options add a steep climb on Thirassia, though staying near the port is always fine. If walking on uneven ground or swimming from a boat is off the table, the catamaran cruise is the better fit—no hike and no open-water entry required.

Your Santorini volcano tour departure point explained

  • Used for: Most traditional volcano and hot springs cruises departing from Fira.
  • Address: Ormos Firon, 847 00 Fira, Greece
  • How to get there: Take the**** cable car from Fira town (5 minutes, but queues in peak season can be long), the 588-step staircase down from Fira (15 to 20 minutes), or the mule path (20 to 30 minutes).

  • Transfers: Hotel transfers usually drop you near the cable car station in Fira, and you continue down independently unless your voucher says otherwise.
  • When to arrive? Allow 30 to 45 minutes before departure in peak season. Missing the boat because of a cable car queue is a common problem.
  • Good to know: No vehicles reach the Old Port. Taxis drop you in Fira town.

Plan your Santorini volcano tours

  • Half‑day volcano & hot springs cruises usually run from about 9am to 1pm or 2 to 5:30pm.
  • Full‑day routes with Thirassia and sunset near Oia can run from around 8:30am to 7:30pm, including hotel transfers.
  • Morning departures are more comfortable in July and August for the exposed crater trail, while sunset and dinner cruises run later and finish after dark.
  • May to September offers warmer sea conditions for the hot‑spring swim; departures are fewer and more weather‑dependent from November to March.

Frequently asked questions about Santorini volcano tours

  • A volcano tour is best if you want to hike the crater and understand Santorini’s geology up close. A catamaran suits you better if you care more about food, swimming, shade, and a relaxed day on the water with views.
