About Akrotiri Archaeological Site

Akrotiri is a crown jewel in any Greek history or archaeology collection, offering a rare glimpse into Bronze Age life. Unlike open-air ruins, its sheltered excavation site allows visitors to explore ancient streets and houses in comfort, making it an essential stop for anyone discovering Santorini’s cultural treasures.

Did you know?

Akrotiri was buried by a volcanic eruption around the 17th century BCE, preserving it much like Pompeii.

No human remains have been found at the site, suggesting the inhabitants evacuated before the eruption.

The settlement features multi-storey buildings, paved streets, and an advanced drainage system, rare for its era.

Many of Akrotiri’s most famous frescoes are displayed in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, not at the site itself.

Excavations began in 1967 under archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos, and new discoveries are still being made today.
