The Quinta da Regaleira has truly fascinating corners, like the famous initiatory well and its network of tunnels, but the overall experience is greatly diminished by the tourist overcrowding. It's almost impossible to enjoy the mysticism or peace of its gardens when you have to wait in monumental lines just to take a picture or walk the paths. Furthermore, the lack of crowd control makes a place that should be magical become a stressful and uncomfortable space to visit.

It was a really nice audio guide. Very descriptive excerpts of history. One thing I would be interested in learning about is the involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. I'm very sure these ancient castles weren't here just NOT being involved in that at at all. The ones responsible for starting that were of royal courts...

Both the palace and the country estate are impressive and highly recommended. Plus, the shuttle ride up to the palace was quick and comfortable—a real plus. Both locations also offered audio guides, although the Wi-Fi and cell service were spotty, so it was better to download the audio guides beforehand.

The Quinta da Regaleira was definitely the highlight. Enjoyed the palace but the park was for us more unusual. Be prepared for a lot of uphill walking between the palace and the park unless you choose to take a taxi/other transportation to the palace.

The places I visited are picturesque! Monserrate Park is fascinating for its complexity, beauty, and well-maintained grounds. Even though it’s a bit far from Lisbon, it’s worth a visit!
    • Get two audio-guided Sintra adventures in one ticket, from Regaleira's wells and tunnels to Monserrate's ornate rooms and gardens.

    • Spiral down Regaleira's Initiation Well, pass through the Portal of the Guardians, and follow underground passages into grottoes and hidden spaces.

    • Look beyond the famous well for the Unfinished Well, Chapel of the Holy Trinity, lakes, towers, and symbols tucked across the estate.

    • Skip the regular queue at Monserrate and explore standout spaces including the Central Gallery, Music Room, Library, and Dining Room.

    • Take the exploration outdoors through Fern Valley, Beckford's Waterfall, the Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, and botanical collections.

Buying tickets in advance was very helpful because they had sold out for the day when we got there. It was a relief that I had already booked the tickets. We could easily skip any lines and head inside. Glad that they give a 30min window for entry. The audio guide was useful to get an intro to the place. I had downloaded it in advance. We didn't listen to the whole guide. Just stood near the entrance, listened to a few sections before heading over to explore. It was useful to have some guidance.
