Gaudi's design is so distinctive. It was good to see in a domestic setting and contrast to the huge proportions of the Sagrada Familia. From the outside the whole residential complex is expressive on a larger scale. It was a pity that the day we visited it was raining & there was no access to the roof terrace. The real delight - and surprise - was the top attic level under his extraordinary brick catinary arches. The display laid out there of models, of the string catinaries, of the design sources from the natural world & of his furniture (which I don't personally like)...was brilliant & the star of the visit to Casa Mila. Why 4 stars? My audio set didn't work & my partner's, which did work, rated it as a bit dull. And blame the rain for loss of say half a star. Not fair, I know.

A visit to Casa Mila (La Pedrera) is a must in Barcelona. The most impressive thing, in my opinion, is the loft with its surprising architectural details, beautiful lighting, and the models, furniture, and sources of inspiration of the genius Gaudi, which helps you to understand him much better when visiting his other works.

I had assumed it was just a rental flat, but it proved far more interesting than I'd imagined. The brick-built attic room, inspired by whale bones, was the most striking feature. Gaudí's meticulous attention to detail was evident throughout the exceptionally well-crafted design.

Switch on the 90-minute audio guide that gives you all the information about this 20th-century building and its architect, Antoni Gaudí. During your visit, see Gaudí’s extensive works at the Espai Gaudí exhibition. The Pedrera apartment lets you experience how a bourgeois family lived in Barcelona. Do not miss going to the rooftop of the building where you will be met by the distinctive corkscrew-style chimneys and a lovely view of Barcelona’s skyline.

    Sant Pau Modernista

Cut past queues to enter the Sant Pau Modernista Site, a beautiful 19th-century attraction in Barcelona. The hospital de Sant Pau functioned until 2009 and is a structure built in harmony with nature. Find an installation symbolizing a dragon on the upper floor, a tribute to the figure and work of Domènech.

The Art Nouveau architecture combined with manicured gardens and grand exhibitions makes for a pleasant visit.
