The Eiffel Tower was constructed between 1887 & 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair, held in Paris. It is a wrought iron structure and is named after Gustave Eiffel. The maintenance of the tower requires over 60 tons of paint every 7 years. The tower has been painted 19 times since it’s inception.

It held the title for being the tallest building in the world for 41 years until the Chrysler building came up in New York City. However, due to the addition of the broadcasting antenna at the top of the tower, it is now taller than the Chrysler.

For contemporary French food visit the Le Jules Verne located at the second floor.

Drink Champagne at a height of 276 m at the Champagne Bar and enjoy your usual buffets at the Buffet Tour Eiffel, located at the esplanade and first and second floor of the tower.

The Eiffel Tower elevators travel a distance of 103,000 km a year, which is two and a half times the circumference of the earth. The tower does not have a fixed height, since it changes with the weather conditions, shrinking in winters and expanding by 6 inches in the summer. More interestingly, Gustave Eiffel also got an apartment designed for himself within the tower, which is now open for access to the public.

The sides of the tower’s first balcony are engraved with the name of 72 scientist and mathematicians who have contributed to the construction of the tower in any way.

The most important reward that Gustave Eiffel left for us is the view that the tower gives. There is no other building in the world that can provide you with a 360 degree of this French city, obviously.

Getting To The Eiffel Tower

The tower is easily accessible by car, bus, metro, bike and the RER. Self-hire bikes are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Velib stations. If you wish to take your car, you can park it any of the underground parking facilities available at the site. The best choice is Quai Branly which is located at a distance of 300 metres.

By Metro: Take line numbers 9 or 6.

By RER: Get down at Champs de Mars- Tour Eiffel station.

By Bus: Get down at stations 82, 42, 87 & 69.
