Castel Sant'Angelo

An imposing Tiber-facing fortress in Rome that began as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, Castel Sant'Angelo has evolved into a papal refuge, prison, and museum—blending imperial grandeur and ancient Roman history.

• The fort follows a massive cylindrical design, symbolizing strength and permanence.

• Climb the spiral ramp from the base to the upper terrace. This was originally used for funeral processions.
