If you ever find yourself wandering the dark, suspiciously cobbled streets of and thinking “You know what this day needs? A bit of history, a few jump scares, and the possibility of being publicly humiliated by a medieval judge,” then congratulations — you’ve found the perfect place. Before you even start the tour, the waiting area already sets the tone. It feels like you’ve stepped straight into some creepy underground tavern from the 1700s. Dim lighting, eerie sounds, strange props everywhere, and the constant feeling that someone might jump out at you at any moment. It’s one of those queues where you actually don’t mind waiting, because there’s so much to look at. The atmosphere builds the suspense brilliantly — you’re laughing with the people around you, but also slightly on edge because you know something ridiculous or terrifying is about to happen. Once the show begins, the actors immediately pull you into Scotland’s darker history. The witch trials are both hilarious and slightly concerning — apparently the legal system back then worked like this: “Are you a witch?” “No.” “Exactly what a witch would say.” The plague doctor section is both educational and deeply unsettling. You quickly realise that medieval medicine mostly involved wearing a bird mask, waving herbs around, and hoping nobody coughed on you. Somehow the actor manages to make a global pandemic funny… which is honestly impressive. Then comes the torture chamber, where you learn about all the horrifying devices people used back in the day. The executioner explaining everything with cheerful enthusiasm somehow makes it even worse — like a tour guide who is far too passionate about medieval pain. One of the creepiest moments is hearing the story of Sawney Bean and his cannibal family. Nothing says Scottish family bonding like living in a cave and eating unlucky travellers. It’s disturbing, weirdly fascinating, and told in a way that keeps everyone both laughing and nervously looking around the room. The courtroom show is absolute chaos in the best way. Someone from the audience will almost certainly be declared guilty of something ridiculous and dragged into the spotlight. The judge’s insults and sarcasm make it one of the funniest parts of the whole experience. Overall, the experience is a perfect mix of history, horror, comedy, and brilliantly committed actors who make every room feel alive (or undead). You’ll learn things, you’ll laugh a lot, and you’ll probably question why you voluntarily walked into a dungeon in the first place. ⭐ Verdict: 10/10 would happily be frightened and roasted by medieval characters again. If you enjoy dark humour, Scottish history, and the thrill of possibly being singled out in front of a crowd, this place is an absolute must when visiting Edinburgh. Just remember… if a judge asks you to step forward, stay very, very quiet.

Overall it was a great experience, even from the moment you walk in you are surrounded by the old creepy theme of the dungeon. You get your photo taken which is professionally edited to set the scene that you were back in those times, personally I have bought my photo every time I have went. Then for the experience, they never fail to make us laugh with their acting and of course scare us which again made us laugh. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Such a good day out, extremely well done and very realistic. I was actually really scared (but I'm a bit of a scaredy cat) it was that convincing! The actors were very very good and very mindful of the people in the room, who to use to interact with. I would 100% go again, definitely worth the money and a great experience about the dark history of Edinburgh 😀

Everything was so easy straight from booking, tickets went to WhatsApp for ease of finding them. On arrival it was straight in, its a better experience the more people are in the group. The performers were amazing, very funny and jumpy in places . It was such a fun and great experience without ruining it for people

Friendly. Efficient service from booking to our final farewell at the end of the experience. Funny, entertaining and enjoyable. Actors and storyline approach really appealed to us. We would highly recommend booking Edinburgh Dungeons - whether visiting or living locally - it was great!
