A great day at sea with Nana, who was very welcoming, always smiling, and had a contagious good mood! The Blue Lagoon and the islands were simply stunning! The meal and drinks were perfect, too! Just a heads-up about the ad title and photo—there are no shipwrecks to see.

Everything was wonderful and well-organized—it was truly a memorable experience. The Blue Cave was a major highlight, and Vis is also a beautiful island with an old town full of narrow alleys and cats. The boat ride was also quite exciting and fantastic.

An unmissable excursion: full of magnificent places, unique views, and waters of magical colors. The Blue Cave is a must if you visit Croatia, but the other stops of the tour are also well worth a visit. Our skippers, Rocco and Pepo, were very good and experienced in navigation and in telling stories about each place visited. Very helpful and kind.

Nearby cities to explore

Reach Croatia’s Blue Cave and 5 nearby islands from Split or Hvar in a single day, without managing boats, cave tickets, or island logistics yourself. Most tours run 10–11 hours and include high-speed boat transfers, Blue Cave entry handling, snorkel gear, and an English-speaking skipper-guide. Many itineraries also add Green Cave, Budikovac’s Blue Lagoon, Stiniva Cove, and the Pakleni or Hvar Islands for varied swims and sightseeing.

Essential info at a glance

  • Distance from Split: Approx. 70–75 km (43–47 miles) by sea, one way
  • Time taken: 1.5–2 hours each way; 6–7 hours island-hopping; 10–11 hours total
  • Best transport option: Organized speedboat tour including Blue Cave, nearby islands, and transfers
  • Sea conditions: Moderate; fast RIB ride with possible bumps and sea spray over open water
  • Entry included? Included on some tours; otherwise paid separately in cash on site
  • Guide included? Yes, English-speaking skipper/guide on most tours
  • Hotel pickup available? From select Split/Trogir hotels; otherwise central harbor meeting points

Best cities to visit the Blue Cave from

City options

The Blue Cave (Modra špilja) lies off tiny Biševo Island, west of Vis in Croatia’s central Adriatic. You can day-trip there from several Dalmatian hubs, with most organized tours departing by speedboat from Split, Hvar, or Trogir, plus easy connections from Vis itself.

Split → Blue Cave (Biševo)

  • ~65–70 km by speedboat via Vis and Pakleni
  • Full-day 5-islands itineraries, often 10–11 hours total
  • Typical stops: Blue Cave, Komiža, Stiniva, Blue Lagoon, Hvar
  • Good if you want a “greatest hits” Dalmatian boat day

Why it works: Split is the main regional hub, so you get the widest choice of Blue Cave day tours and departure times, letting you fold a big island-hopping adventure into an otherwise land-based Split stay without changing hotels.

Hvar → Blue Cave (Biševo)

  • Around 35–40 nautical miles by fast boat
  • Usually 7–8 hours round-trip from Hvar Town
  • Often combines Blue, Green, Monk Seal caves plus swim stops
  • Shorter crossings, slightly later morning departures

Why it works: Starting closer to Biševo means less time in open sea and more time at caves and coves, making Hvar a strong base if you want an unhurried day with extra swimming rather than the longest possible itinerary.

Trogir → Blue Cave (Biševo)

  • Adds ~30 minutes transfer versus Split departures
  • Many tours shuttle to Split harbor, then share boats
  • Same 5-islands routes and inclusions as Split tours
  • Handy if you’re already staying near Trogir’s marina

Why it works: Using Trogir lets you tap into Split’s huge tour supply without relocating; transfers are handled for you, so you simply board near Trogir, ride into Split, and continue straight out toward Vis and the Blue Cave.

Vis / Komiža → Blue Cave (Biševo)

  • Komiža–Biševo about 5.5 km, ~30 minutes by local boat
  • DIY cave visits plus flexible time around Vis Island
  • Easier to go early or late and avoid longest queues
  • Suits slower itineraries with at least one Vis overnight

Why it works: Basing on Vis turns the Blue Cave from a long “there-and-back” dash into a short side-trip within a deeper Vis stay, ideal if you’d rather explore local beaches, villages, and history at your own pace between cave visits.

Public ferry + local Blue Cave boat

Take a Jadrolinija catamaran from Hvar Town to Vis Town (about 1 hour), then bus or taxi to Komiža. From Komiža port, board an official local boat to Biševo’s Mezoporat bay and transfer to the Blue Cave boats. Ferries are limited, so you must match ferry, bus, and cave times carefully.

Best for: Independent planners who are happy managing multiple schedules and don’t mind a long DIY day.
Time taken: 10–11 hours round trip from Hvar.
Approx price: €35–€50 total.

Public ferry + overnight on Vis

Travel by Jadrolinija catamaran from Hvar Town to Vis Town, stay overnight, then visit the Blue Cave from Komiža the next morning when it’s quieter. Take a short bus/taxi from Vis to Komiža, then the official Biševo boat and cave entry boat. Return to Hvar the following day by ferry.

Best for: Slow travelers who prefer a relaxed schedule and extra time exploring Vis and Komiža.

Private speedboat charter from Hvar

Charter a private speedboat from Hvar Town directly to Biševo (about 1–1.5 hours each way), then on to other islands of your choice. The skipper handles the Blue Cave queue and timings while you customize swim stops and lunch plans.

Best for: Groups who value flexibility, privacy, and comfort over cost, and want to avoid crowds by adjusting departure times.

DIY trip or guided tour: what works better?

DIY trip

Both DIY and guided options will get you to Croatia’s Blue Cave; the better choice depends on how much planning and structure you want for the day.

DIY trip highlights:
• Cheaper if already staying on Vis
• Flexibility in departure and timing
• Opportunity to build your own itinerary
• Downsides include separate bookings for ferries and potential long queues.

Which Split to Blue Cave day trip should you choose?

Classic Blue Cave & 5 Islands small‑group tour (from Split)

A full-day speedboat adventure hitting the signature “5 islands” in one go. Ideal if you want the must‑see route handled for you, with cave tickets organized and no DIY ferry juggling.

Private Blue Cave & 5 Islands charter (from Split)

You get the whole speedboat for your own group, with a skipper tailoring stops and timing. Great for starting earlier/later and avoiding crowds.

Private Blue Cave & 5 Islands charter (from Trogir)

Tailored private experience departing directly from Trogir, avoiding the need to reach Split’s harbor first. Ideal for those based in or near Trogir.

Hvar-based Blue & Green Caves with 5 Islands

Starting from Hvar cuts travel time to Biševo, often meaning shorter waits and more time for swimming and extra cave stops.

Things to Know Before Booking Your Split to Blue Cave Day Trip

  • Book early for summer departures. Blue Cave and 5‑island speedboat tours from Split sell out days or weeks ahead. Reserve at least 5–7 days in advance.

  • Expect a long, full-day commitment. Standard group tours run about 10–11 hours round trip.

  • Check what your ticket actually includes. Some tours include Blue Cave entry while others charge extra.

  • Choose between group and private boats. Private tours offer customization but at a higher cost.

  • Understand the physical and comfort trade‑offs. Long hours on a fast RIB can be challenging.

  • Blue Cave access is not guaranteed. Weather conditions may affect entry.

  • Be realistic about time at each stop. Multi‑stop itineraries offer short swims and sightseeing windows.

  • Confirm meeting points and departure city. Ensure your chosen option matches your location.

What to expect on a Split to Blue Cave & 5 Islands day trip

Depart from Split Harbor

Meet your skipper at Split’s central harbor and board a modern speedboat with safety gear and padded seating. Most tours leave early to beat Blue Cave crowds.

High-Speed Cruise to Biševo

Skim across the Adriatic toward Biševo, passing Brač and Hvar with open-sea views and refreshing breezes.

Enter the Magical Blue Cave

Transfer to small local boats, skip handling tickets yourself, and duck through the narrow entrance into the glowing Modra špilja. Guides explain the light phenomenon.

Island Villages, Coves, and Lagoon

Continue to Komiža for a coffee break, then cruise along Vis’s dramatic coast towards Stiniva Cove and Budikovac’s Blue Lagoon.

Lunch and Beach Time on Pakleni

Anchor at Palmižana Bay on the Pakleni Islands for a longer pause. Enjoy a leisurely restaurant lunch or a scenic picnic.

If your tour includes Hvar or extras

Explore Hvar Town for its harbor, historical sites, and local eateries if extra stops are part of your itinerary.

Return to Split Promenade

Cruise back toward Split as the afternoon softens, often with music and calmer seas. Arrivals are timed for a relaxed return.

Is this Split to Blue Cave & 5 Islands day trip right for you?
