This is my second visit to the Bassin des Lumières, and what I appreciate most about it is the venue itself, given my knowledge of the history of the submarine base. Then, discovering artists in this way is very appealing, with a breathtaking sound and light show. I had already seen works by Van Gogh and Vermeersch, and now I’ve just seen Frida Kahlo—whose story I love—and Matisse, who is from my home region, the North. I’ll definitely return to the Bassin des Lumières to discover or rediscover other artists.

Such a beautiful peaceful experience. The exhibit experience is made more powerful by the contrast of its location - in the bowels of a time of war and destruction. The juxtaposition of the art, joy and peace of Matisse with the hidden power of occupation and destruction gives the exhibit impact of emotion and awe. The refection of the art into calm waters is very effective to remind the Viewer of the surroundings. The walls of the bunker for the exhibit highlight the nature of art and war.

Excellent exhibition! The location, a former Nazi submarine base in Bordeaux, was a stunning and uniquely suitable venue for such a show, with the imagery projected onto the walls AND reflecting off the water below! A completely new experience for me and it took a few minutes to adjust to the stimulating visuals. Well worth the entry fee!
